By morning, the story had begun to spread.
A nurse recognized Evelyn. Then another. Old colleagues called Nathan. Files were quietly reopened. The past was no longer buried—it was resurfacing, piece by piece.
Madison watched it happen with growing unease.
Everything she had built—her influence over Daniel, her control over the household, her careful positioning—was slipping.
And then the call came.
The legal firm handling Richard’s estate requested a meeting.
Immediately.
Madison insisted on attending.
Inside the conference room, the lawyer adjusted his glasses and spoke carefully.
“Mr. Carter made amendments to his will six months ago.”
Madison smiled faintly. “Yes, we discussed simplifying things.”
The lawyer nodded. “Indeed. However… there is a clause that activates under medical crisis.”
Evelyn looked up.
The lawyer continued, “If Mr. Carter becomes incapacitated, full medical and financial decision authority transfers to… Dr. Evelyn Monroe.”
Silence.
Madison’s face drained of color.
“That’s not possible,” she whispered.
“It is,” the lawyer said calmly. “And it is legally binding.”
