PART 4 – The Reckoning

Richard’s procedure was scheduled for noon.
Complications arose before they even began.
A junior doctor rushed into the hallway. “There’s an issue with the arterial access—unexpected blockage.”
Nathan frowned. “We’ll need to adjust—”
“I can do it,” Evelyn said.
Everyone turned.
Nathan studied her carefully. “It’s been years.”
Evelyn met his gaze. “My hands remember.”
A pause.
Then Nathan nodded. “Scrub in.”
Inside the operating room, time bent.
The rhythm returned—the precision, the instinct, the calm authority. Nurses moved without question. Doctors followed her lead.
Evelyn worked as if she had never left.
Minutes stretched into hours.
And then—
“It’s clear,” she said quietly.
The monitors steadied.
A heartbeat, strong and certain, filled the room.
Nathan exhaled. “Procedure successful.”
Outside, Daniel waited, his hands trembling.
When Evelyn stepped out, still in surgical scrubs, he stared at her like he was seeing her for the first time.
“You… saved him.”
