Chapter 2: The Weight of Betrayal

The police arrived that evening.

Richard didn’t resist when they placed him in handcuffs. Perhaps he knew this moment had been waiting for him all along. As he was led away, he turned once, looking at Eleanor—not for forgiveness, but for acknowledgment.

She gave him none.

Sofia sat quietly in the living room, still in her maid’s uniform, though it now felt like a costume from a life that no longer belonged to her.

“I don’t know who I am anymore,” she whispered.

Eleanor sat beside her. “You’re Sofia. And you’re also the daughter I lost. Both can be true.”

“But everything I’ve ever known…” Sofia’s voice broke. “My mother—the woman who raised me—she loved me.”

Eleanor nodded gently. “Then she was your mother in every way that matters. Love is not defined by blood alone.”

That night, for the first time, Eleanor didn’t sleep in the master bedroom.

She stayed in the guest room—beside Sofia’s.
