Chapter 1: The Final Offer

The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound tethering Clara to reality. Her body felt like it had been crushed under the weight of a freight train. A thick, rigid neck brace kept her staring straight up at the sterile, fluorescent lights of the hospital room. Her face throbbed, every bruise a painful reminder of the "accident" that had put her here.

The heavy wooden door clicked shut. Clara couldn’t turn her head, but the sharp, rhythmic clacking of expensive heels on the linoleum floor told her exactly who had arrived.

Esther Vance.

Esther leaned over the bed, her face swimming into Clara’s limited field of vision. She looked immaculate, as always—a crisp white blazer, a vibrant teal blouse, and a heavy emerald necklace that screamed generational wealth. But beneath the polished veneer, her eyes burned with cold, unadulterated malice.

"You should have taken the money and run," Esther hissed, her voice a venomous whisper that seemed to suck the air out of the room.

Clara’s heart rate spiked, the monitor’s tempo accelerating. She tried to speak, but her throat was dry, and the brace restricted her jaw.

"Now," Esther continued, her face contorting into an ugly sneer, "you get nothing but a grave!"

Before Clara could process the threat, Esther’s hands darted out. She grabbed the spare pillow resting near Clara’s side and forcefully brought it down over Clara’s face. Panic exploded in Clara’s chest. The darkness was immediate and suffocating. She thrashed underneath the heavy down feathers, her lungs screaming for oxygen, but her broken body was no match for Esther’s desperate strength.

I can't die here, Clara thought, her mind racing. Not after everything I know.

Her right hand, bruised and battered, flailed blindly across the sheets. Her fingertips brushed against the cold, hard plastic of the call remote. With the last ounce of her fading strength, she curled her fingers around it and pressed her thumb down hard on the bright red button.

Suddenly, the hospital room door burst open with a deafening crash.

"Hey!" a voice yelled.

Esther froze, the pillow hovering just inches above Clara’s gasping mouth. Clara sucked in a ragged breath of stale hospital air, her eyes fluttering open to see Julian standing in the doorway. He looked paralyzed, his face pale with horror as he took in the scene. The cardboard coffee cup he was holding slipped from his grasp, tumbling through the air in what felt like slow motion before hitting the floor, dark roast coffee splashing violently across the pristine white tiles.

But Julian wasn't alone. Behind him, a chaotic wave of people surged into the room. Uniformed NYPD officers pushed past him, hands on their holsters. Trailing right behind them was a swarm of paparazzi, their camera flashes erupting like strobe lights, immortalizing Esther Vance in her moment of attempted murder.

Esther backed away, her hands raised, the flawless mask of the high-society matriarch shattered into pieces.

Clara looked past the frantic officers and the blinding flashes, locking eyes with the woman who had tried to bury her secrets along with her. A weak, bloody smile crept onto Clara’s lips.

"Say goodbye to everything, Esther," Clara rasped, her voice barely a whisper, yet echoing louder than the chaos around them.
