Chapter 9: The Heist and the Chase

The Price of Silence

The morning mist clung heavily to the cobblestone streets of Geneva as Julian and Clara abandoned their dingy hotel room. The digital clock on Julian’s burner phone read 8:15 AM.

Julian’s "backdoor" into the Banque Privée de Genève was not a figurative one; it was a forgotten piece of architectural history. Decades ago, the bank had absorbed an adjacent 19th-century building, connecting it via a subterranean utility tunnel that housed the massive fiber-optic cables and HVAC units.

Navigating the damp, echoing tunnel beneath the Rue du Rhône, Julian led the way, using his phone’s flashlight. Clara followed closely, every step sending a jolt of pain through her ribs, but the adrenaline pulsing in her veins kept her moving. They bypassed a heavy iron grate using a crowbar Julian had acquired from a local hardware store, stepping into the sterile, white-tiled basement of the bank itself.

"The vault elevators are just past the security nexus," Clara whispered, pulling the foam collar tight around her neck. "If we trip a laser, the whole building goes on lockdown."

"Then we walk softly," Julian replied.

Thanks to the early hour, the basement was operating on a skeleton crew. They slipped past the breakroom and reached the secure service elevator. Julian used a cloned RFID card—a costly purchase from his underworld contacts in the Pâquis district—to activate the lift.

When the doors opened to the subterranean vault level, the air was freezing. Row upon row of gleaming titanium safety deposit boxes lined the massive walls. Clara led him down aisle 4, her hands shaking as she pulled the heavy brass key from her pocket.

Box 4082.

She inserted the key. It turned with a heavy, satisfying click. A small digital screen illuminated above the lock, requesting a biometric scan. Clara pressed her right thumb against the glass pad. A green laser swept over her skin.

Scan Confirmed. The screen shifted, displaying a digital keypad. Clara took a deep breath and punched in the twelve-digit alphanumeric code from memory.

The heavy titanium door hissed open, unsealing the vacuum-locked compartment. Inside sat a thick, waterproof document bag. Clara pulled it out, unzipping the top to reveal the stack of paper—the damning Vance foundation ledgers, printed in crisp, undeniable black and white.

"We have it," Julian breathed, quickly shoving the bag into his duffel. "Let's go."

They retraced their steps, riding the elevator up to the ground-floor lobby. Clara’s plan was to blend in with the morning rush of wealthy clients, using the front door only to exit. But as the brass-trimmed doors slid open, Julian froze.

Standing in the center of the opulent marble lobby, scanning the crowd, was the man in the gray windbreaker from the hospital. Vargas’s operative.

"Run," Julian hissed.

Julian grabbed Clara’s hand, yanking her toward the side exit leading to the alleyway. The operative shouted in Russian, reaching into his jacket. Julian shoved the heavy glass door open, pulling Clara into the biting morning air.

They sprinted down the narrow cobblestone alley. Behind them, the sharp crack of a silenced pistol echoed, a bullet shattering the brickwork mere inches from Julian’s head.

"Keep moving!" Julian yelled, practically carrying Clara as they burst onto a busy avenue.

They darted through moving traffic, the blare of European car horns masking the sound of their pursuers. Julian spotted a crowded tram pulling up to a stop. He shoved Clara through the closing doors just as they sealed shut, trapping Vargas’s men on the sidewalk. As the tram pulled away, Clara collapsed against the plastic seat, clutching her ribs, the heavy duffel bag secured tightly between Julian’s feet.
