Chapter 11: The Return

The private jet cut through the night sky, flying well under the radar of commercial flight paths. They touched down at a small, private airfield in upstate New York in the dead of night, exactly four days before Esther’s criminal trial was scheduled to begin.

Arthur’s connections ran deep. Waiting on the tarmac was a black SUV driven by armed private security. They drove straight to a discreet, brutalist building in lower Manhattan—the field office of the FBI's Financial Crimes Division.

Clara, Julian, and Arthur sat across from Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Lin, a no-nonsense prosecutor known for tearing white-collar criminals apart.

Lin spent two hours verifying the ledger against known offshore tax havens. When she finally closed the file, she let out a long breath.

"It's a smoking gun," Lin confirmed, tapping the heavy binder. "The wire transfers have Esther’s encrypted digital signature. We have enough to add twenty counts of federal wire fraud to her state charges. The state DA is already bleeding out from the PR campaign her lawyers are running. The attempted murder charge is hanging by a thread."

"So, what's the play?" Julian asked, leaning forward.

"We don't tip our hand," Lin said, a sharp smile forming on her lips. "Let her defense team go to trial on Monday. Let them think they’ve won the PR war. Let Esther take the stand feeling invincible. Then, we drop this into discovery mid-trial."

Lin turned her gaze to Clara, her expression softening slightly. "Miss Evans, Pierce Sterling is going to try to destroy you on that stand. He will use your injuries, your medical history, and your lack of digital evidence to paint you as a liar. You have to hold the line until we introduce the ledger."

Clara touched the foam collar around her neck, remembering the suffocating darkness of the hospital pillow. She felt the heavy gaze of the prosecutor, Arthur, and Julian on her.

"I've survived Esther Vance trying to kill me twice," Clara said, her voice like steel. "Pierce Sterling is just a lawyer. I can handle him."
