Chapter 12: Closing the Book

Mid-January brought a sudden, unexpected drop in temperature, freezing the creek solid and blanketing the property in a biting frost. It also brought a thick, manila envelope from Julian’s legal team in Manhattan.
Julian sat in his study, the heavy oak doors closed. The fire in the hearth provided the only light, casting long shadows across his mahogany desk. Clara knocked softly before pushing the door open, carrying two mugs of tea.
She saw the envelope resting on his desk and the tense set of his jaw. Her heart gave a nervous flutter.
"Bad news?" she asked cautiously, setting a mug in front of him.
Julian sighed, rubbing his temples. He picked up the thick stack of papers and offered them to her. "Actually... it's the best news we could have hoped for. But it brings back bad memories."
Clara took the papers, scanning the dense legal jargon. Her eyes caught a few key phrases: Relinquishment of Parental Rights, Permanent Restraining Order, and Severance of All Ties.
"Victoria?" Clara asked, looking up.
"She ran out of money in Paris," Julian explained, his voice devoid of any pity. "She got involved with some very unsavory investors and needed a massive bailout to avoid French prison. She reached out to my lawyers."
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his arms. "I gave her the money. Enough to clear her debts and keep her comfortable, on one absolute, non-negotiable condition. She had to formally, legally relinquish all parental rights to Lily. She cannot contact her, she cannot claim her, and she has no legal standing as a step-parent or guardian."
Clara stared at the documents, a profound sense of relief washing over her. "She signed it?"
"She signed it without a second thought," Julian said, a flash of disgust crossing his features. "She traded her rights for a bailout. She is permanently, legally gone from our lives."
Clara walked around the desk and wrapped her arms around Julian’s shoulders from behind, pressing her cheek against his hair. "It's over, Julian. She can never hurt her again."
Julian reached up, gripping Clara’s hand tightly. "I know. And now that her legal ties to Lily are severed completely..." He paused, turning his head to look at Clara. "It opens a door. If, down the line, someone else wanted to adopt her."
Clara’s breath hitched. She looked at Julian, the magnitude of what he was suggesting hitting her with the force of a freight train. To be Lily's legal mother.

"Julian..."
"Not today," Julian promised, kissing the knuckles of her hand. "But someday. When you're ready. I just wanted you to know that the door is open."
