Chapter 18: The Newest Addition

Late August brought a sweltering heat wave to Willow Creek, but inside the local hospital's maternity ward, the air was cool, quiet, and filled with a reverent anticipation.
Julian paced the length of the private room, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, running a hand through his dark hair. On the bed, Clara looked exhausted but radiant, her skin glowing despite the grueling twelve hours of labor she had just endured. Resting softly against her chest, wrapped in a striped hospital blanket, was a tiny, sleeping infant.
Leo Thomas Harrington had arrived just before dawn, weighing a healthy eight pounds, with a shock of dark hair that perfectly matched his father's.
Julian finally stopped pacing and walked over to the edge of the bed. He reached out with a trembling finger, gently stroking the impossibly soft skin of his son's cheek. Leo shifted slightly, letting out a tiny, soft sigh before settling back against Clara's heartbeat.
"He's perfect," Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. He looked up at Clara, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "You were incredible, Clara. I am so entirely in awe of you."
Clara smiled wearily, shifting her arm to hold Leo more securely. "He's got your chin, Julian. I think he’s going to be just as stubborn as you are."
Julian chuckled softly, leaning down to press a lingering kiss to Clara's forehead. "Let's hope he has your kindness to balance it out."
A soft knock at the door interrupted them. Julian turned as the heavy wooden door pushed open, revealing Marcus—Julian's head of security, who had long since become a trusted family friend—escorting a very eager ten-year-old girl.
Lily bounded into the room, practically vibrating with excitement, though she caught herself and slowed her pace to a tiptoe as she approached the bed. She was clutching a soft, blue knit blanket she had picked out herself.
"Can I see him?" Lily asked, her voice an excited, hushed whisper.
"Come here, sweetheart," Clara said softly, shifting carefully to the side to make room for Lily on the edge of the bed.
Julian helped Lily up, placing his hands on her shoulders as she leaned over to get her first real look at her baby brother. Lily’s eyes widened in pure wonder as she took in the tiny, sleeping face, the small fists curled near his chin, and the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest.
"He's so small," Lily breathed, reaching out tentatively to touch Leo's tiny hand. Instantly, the newborn's fingers curled around Lily's index finger, holding on with a surprising amount of strength.
Lily gasped, looking up at Julian and Clara with a brilliant, teary smile. "He's holding my hand, Mom."
Hearing Lily call her "Mom" still sent a profound thrill through Clara's heart, but in this moment, it felt more poignant than ever. The circle of their family had expanded, cementing the bonds they had fought so hard to build.

"He knows his big sister is going to protect him," Julian said softly, resting his chin on the top of Lily's head.
"I will," Lily promised fiercely, looking back down at the baby. "I'll protect him from everything, forever."
