Chapter 15: The Autumn Vows

They chose October for the wedding, exactly one year after the Harvest Festival where Julian had first publicly claimed them as a family. They didn't want a massive, opulent affair. The sprawling lawns of their estate provided the perfect, intimate backdrop.
The trees were ablaze with fiery reds, burnt oranges, and vibrant yellows. A wooden archway, draped in white linen and autumn foliage, was set up near the edge of the creek. Rows of wooden folding chairs held a small gathering of Julian's closest friends, a few trusted colleagues, and their favorite neighbors from Willow Creek.
Julian stood at the altar in a sharp, charcoal-gray suit, his hands clasped in front of him to hide a slight tremble. He watched as the string quartet began to play a soft, classical melody.
First down the grassy aisle was Lily. She wore a beautiful, dusty-rose dress, a crown of woven autumn leaves resting in her dark hair. She held a small velvet pillow carrying their wedding bands, her face a picture of intense, adorable concentration as she fulfilled her duties as the ring bearer. When she reached Julian, he winked at her, and she gave him a bright, missing-tooth smile before taking her place beside him.
Then, the music swelled, and Clara appeared.
Julian felt his breath catch in his throat. She was a vision in a simple, elegant lace gown that swept the autumn leaves as she walked. Her honey-blonde hair was pinned up loosely, and her eyes were locked entirely on his. The faint scar on her jaw—the permanent reminder of her fierce protection—was visible, and to Julian, it made her look undeniably, breathtakingly beautiful.
When she reached the altar, Julian took her hands, his thumbs gently brushing her knuckles.
The ceremony was short, heartfelt, and entirely theirs. They had written their own vows. When it was Clara's turn, she didn't just speak to Julian; she turned slightly to include Lily.
"Julian, you gave me a safe harbor when I was adrift," Clara said, her voice clear and steady in the crisp autumn air. "You showed me that trust is earned, and love is a choice we make every single day. And Lily..." She looked down at the little girl, her eyes shining. "You are the bravest, brightest light in my life. I promise to protect you, to guide you, and to love you as my own, for the rest of my days."
By the time Julian finished his vows, there wasn't a dry eye in the small crowd.

"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant smiled. "You may kiss the bride."
Julian pulled Clara into his arms, kissing her with a depth of passion and gratitude that spoke volumes. The crowd cheered, and Barnaby let out a celebratory bark from the back row. As they broke apart, Julian scooped Lily up in his arms, holding his new wife tightly with his free hand. They walked back up the aisle together, a unified, unbreakable front.
