Chapter 2 - The Dinner I Paid For.

.The hotel room was only twelve minutes from the house, but to Claire it felt like another country.

Mia sat wrapped in a thick white blanket while room service brought warm soup, buttered pasta, and hot chocolate.

The child ate slowly at first.

Then she began eating with the desperate concentration of someone who had been hungry longer than she wanted to admit.

Claire sat beside her and kept her voice gentle.

"Did this happen before tonight?"

Mia stared into her bowl.

"Grandma says little girls have to learn not to be greedy."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"What does she do when she thinks you're greedy?"

Mia shrugged.

"Sometimes I wait in my room."

She paused.

"Sometimes outside."

Claire reached for her phone but stopped before touching it.

She did not want Mia to think the conversation was an interrogation.

"And Daddy?"

Mia looked confused by the question.

"Daddy says Grandma knows best."

That answer hurt more than Claire expected.

Ethan had always described himself as the relaxed parent.

Claire had once mistaken that for patience.

Now she wondered how often it had simply meant absence.

After Mia fell asleep, Claire opened her laptop at the small desk by the window.

She downloaded six months of statements from their household account.

The numbers formed a pattern almost immediately.

Restaurant charges appeared on nights Claire had been traveling.

Designer purchases appeared days after Ethan complained that the mortgage payment felt tight.

There were repeated transfers to Diane labeled "childcare" even during weeks Mia had attended preschool full time.

Claire added them carefully.

Twenty-two thousand dollars in six months.

Then she found something worse.

A monthly payment of $2,850 was going to a storage company in another state.

Claire had never rented a storage unit.

She clicked through the payment history.

The account had been active for eleven months.

Her phone began vibrating.

Ethan.

She let it ring.

Then came a text.

WHERE ARE YOU?

A second followed.

MOM IS UPSET.

Claire almost laughed.

Not "Is Mia okay?"

Not "I'm sorry."

His first concern was Diane.

Claire took screenshots and emailed them to a new folder she created called THURSDAY NIGHT.

Then she called Rachel Kim, a family-law attorney and one of Claire's oldest friends.

Rachel answered on the second ring.

"Please tell me you're calling because you finally want to use those vacation days."

Claire looked at her sleeping daughter.

"I need a lawyer."

Rachel's tone changed instantly.

"Tell me what happened."

Claire told her everything without exaggerating a single detail.

When she finished, Rachel stayed quiet for several seconds.

"Do not go back to that house alone tonight."

"I wasn't planning to."

"And don't drain joint accounts. Preserve records, protect your income, and make only lawful changes you can document."

Claire nodded even though Rachel could not see her.

"Already doing that."

Rachel asked her to forward the statements.

Claire sent them.

Three minutes later, Rachel called back.

"Claire, the storage payments aren't the part that worries me most."

Claire sat upright.

"What is?"

"There's a loan payment buried in here."

"We don't have another loan."

Rachel's voice became very careful.

"Then someone may have opened one using your information."

Claire stared at the screen.

On the other side of the wall, Mia slept peacefully for the first time that night.

Claire whispered the question she was suddenly afraid to hear answered.

"How much?"

May you like

Rachel took a breath.

"One hundred and forty thousand dollars."
