Chapter 7 - Two Hours and Twelve Minutes.

.The timestamp turned a painful memory into evidence.
Mia had not been outside for five minutes.
She had been outside for two hours and twelve minutes.
Claire watched the footage once.
Rachel watched it twice.
Neither woman spoke during the second viewing.
The camera did not record sound, but it did not need to.
At 5:31, Diane opened the balcony door while holding the bread roll.
Mia stepped outside reluctantly.
Diane pointed toward a small chair near the railing.
Mia sat down.
At 5:36, Ethan walked through the living room and looked directly toward the balcony.
He stopped for three seconds.
Then he continued into the dining room.
At 6:08, one of the dinner guests approached the glass with a wineglass in her hand.
She looked outside, turned toward someone off camera, and laughed.
At 6:52, Mia stood and knocked on the glass.
No one opened the door.
At 7:14, she knocked again.
At 7:43, Claire appeared.
Rachel closed the laptop.
"Save copies in three places."
Claire did.
Her hands were shaking now.
She had spent the previous day wondering whether anger had magnified what she saw.
The video erased that doubt.
Mia had been visible to everyone.
Her father had seen her.
He had chosen not to act.
Rachel forwarded a preservation notice to both attorneys and the security company.
Then she told Claire not to send the footage to Ethan.
"Let his lawyer keep using the five-minute story if they want."
Claire understood.
A lie was more useful when the liar had time to repeat it.
The next morning, Ethan requested a video call with Mia.
Under Rachel's advice, Claire agreed to a short call while staying nearby.
Mia was excited at first.
"Daddy, I got pancakes."
Ethan smiled.
"That's great, bug."
For several minutes, he sounded like the father Claire remembered.
Then he asked where they were staying.
Claire stepped closer.
"Don't ask her that."
Ethan's face changed.
"I'm talking to my daughter."
"Then talk to her about her day."
Mia looked between them, suddenly anxious.
Ethan softened his tone.
"Grandma misses you."
Mia's smile vanished.
"I don't want the balcony."
Ethan closed his eyes briefly.
"Mia, Grandma didn't mean to scare you."
Claire felt heat rise in her chest.
"She left her outside for more than two hours."
Ethan froze.
The color drained from his face.
"What did you say?"
Claire watched him carefully.
"Two hours and twelve minutes."
He looked off screen.
Claire realized someone else was in the room with him.
"Who is there?"
No answer.
Then Diane's voice came faintly through the speakers.
"End the call."
Ethan reached toward the camera.
Claire spoke before the screen went black.
"We have the recording."
The call ended.
Rachel, who had listened from across the room, let out a slow breath.
"Now they know."
Claire nodded.
Her phone buzzed less than a minute later.
It was not Ethan.
It was one of the dinner guests.
May you like
The message contained only seven words.
I need to tell you what happened.
