Chapter 5 - The House on Briar Lane.

.The address was forty-three miles from Claire's home.

Briar Lane ended near a small lake outside the city, where older homes sat behind long driveways and winter-bare trees.

Claire had passed the area before but never had a reason to stop.

Now one of those houses might be connected to a debt carrying her name.

Rachel insisted they not visit immediately.

"We need documents before curiosity."

Claire knew she was right.

By late afternoon, they had enough public records to identify the property.

The buyer was North Briar Holdings.

The purchase price was $310,000.

The down payment had come from a cashier's check issued from an account Claire recognized.

Her home-equity line.

Claire stared at the number until the screen blurred.

She had opened that line years earlier as an emergency backup and had never knowingly used it.

"Can Ethan access that?"

Rachel asked.

"Not without me."

"Then we need the original authorization."

A request was submitted immediately.

While they waited, Claire received an email from her employer's human-resources director asking for a private call.

Her hands went cold.

Ethan had followed through on his threat.

Claire joined the video call from the hotel bedroom while Rachel sat out of camera range.

The HR director, Marisol Grant, looked serious but not accusatory.

"Claire, your husband contacted our office this afternoon."

Claire kept her face still.

"What did he say?"

"He claimed you were experiencing a personal crisis and had improperly restricted his access to company-linked funds."

Claire almost interrupted.

Marisol raised a hand gently.

"Before you respond, finance already reviewed the charges."

Claire waited.

"The card was issued under your executive expense profile, not his."

Marisol's expression sharpened.

"We also found personal purchases that violate company policy."

Claire felt a new wave of anger.

"I didn't make them."

"We suspected that."

Marisol explained that the card had been saved to a household digital wallet.

Transactions included restaurant bills, luxury shopping, and a weekend resort reservation.

The resort reservation was for two adults.

Claire had been in Denver that weekend.

Rachel slowly looked up from her notes.

Claire's voice came out quieter than she intended.

"Can you send me the transaction dates?"

"Yes."

Marisol paused.

"Claire, is there a security concern we should know about?"

Claire chose her words carefully.

"There may have been unauthorized access to my financial information."

Marisol nodded.

"We'll preserve everything."

After the call, Claire sat in silence.

The house was bad enough.

The company card was another layer.

But the resort reservation opened a question she had not wanted to ask.

Rachel broke the silence.

"Do you want me to look at the dates?"

Claire nodded.

Rachel compared the resort charge with Claire's calendar.

"You were traveling for work."

"I know."

"And Ethan told you he was home with Mia?"

Claire remembered the nightly video calls.

Most had been short.

Ethan had always said Mia was already asleep.

Claire stood and walked to the window.

"I need to know who was with him."

Before Rachel could answer, an email arrived from the bank.

The home-equity authorization was attached.

Claire opened it.

The signature was not hers.

But that was not the most disturbing detail.

The witness line carried a name Claire recognized immediately.

Diane Bennett.
