The moment Elena hung up the phone, the silence inside The Copper Lantern shattered.
Murmurs spread like wildfire.
Phones came out.
People began recording.
David stepped back, his face pale, eyes darting across the room as if searching for an exit that no longer existed.
“You just ruined everything,” he hissed at Maya, but his voice had lost its power.
Maya didn’t respond.
She was still trembling—but something had changed. For the first time in years, she wasn’t looking at him for permission.
She was looking at her mother.

She didn’t blink.
Rebecca suddenly stood up, her chair scraping loudly.
“This is ridiculous,” she snapped. “We’re leaving.”
But instead of heading for the front entrance… she turned toward the kitchen.
Elena noticed instantly.

“Stop her,” Elena said calmly.
The restaurant manager, already on edge, stepped in front of Rebecca before she could push through the swinging kitchen doors.
