Chapter 10 - The Father in the Frame.

Adrian watched the forty-seven-second video without moving until his own face appeared beside the raised car.

Then he reached for the tablet.

Alvarez pulled it away.

"Don't touch it."

Adrian looked at him as if waking from anesthesia.

"I can explain."

Evelyn hated how often guilty people began with those words.

"Then start."

Adrian sat across from them in a private hospital conference room while Leo slept two doors away.

"I went into the garage because I couldn't find Owen."

"Why were you looking for him?"

"There had been threatening letters about the company, and he was supposed to travel with Leo the next morning."

Alvarez folded his arms.

"What did you see?"

"Owen under the car."

"And Lenora?"

"She was standing near the workbench."

Evelyn leaned forward.

"You heard them talking about the brakes."

"No."

"The recording says otherwise."

Adrian shook his head.

"The tablet was in the back seat near the garage door."

"So?"

"They were on the far side of the car."

His voice grew desperate.

"I entered after that conversation."

Alvarez replayed the clip while watching the timestamp.

Adrian's face appeared during the final two seconds, immediately after his voice said, "Enough."

"What were you saying enough to?"

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

"Lenora and Owen were arguing."

"About what?"

"I thought it was about security staffing."

Evelyn stared at him.

"And the raised car?"

"Owen said he was checking a sensor."

The room became painfully quiet.

"You believed him."

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

"Yes."

"Again."

He flinched.

Alvarez sent the memory card to digital forensics for enhancement.

By noon, the existence of the video leaked to the press.

Only one person outside the investigation knew exactly what it contained.

Martin Rusk.

He appeared on television beside Lenora and claimed Adrian had "long-standing knowledge of irregularities surrounding Leo's accident."

Lenora looked devastated as she announced she was considering divorce.

Evelyn nearly threw the remote.

"She was in the garage."

Alvarez watched the broadcast without expression.

"She is getting ahead of the evidence."

"She is turning Adrian into the villain before anyone hears the whole recording."

"That tells us she is scared."

"It also tells us she is winning."

The district attorney ordered Adrian interviewed under caution.

His attorneys advised him not to speak further.

For the next twelve hours, Leo's father disappeared behind conference-room doors while Leo repeatedly asked why he could not visit.

Evelyn gave him the only answer she trusted.

"Your father is trying to tell the truth, and sometimes the truth takes longer when people have spent years avoiding it."

Leo looked unconvinced.

"Does Dad know who hurt Mom?"

Evelyn's breath caught.

"Why would you ask that?"

Leo looked toward the window.

"I heard Lenora and Mr. Pike fighting after the fire alarm started."

"At Hawthorne Hall?"

He nodded.

"She said, 'You promised it would look like Isabel.'"

The name seemed to remove the air from the room.

"Are you certain?"

"Yes."

"What did Owen say?"

Leo squeezed the blanket between his fingers.

"He said, 'It worked the first time.'"

Evelyn left the room and found Alvarez at the nurses' station.

When she repeated the words, he stopped writing.

Isabel's death had been ruled an accidental drowning after her sailboat capsized during a sudden summer storm.

Owen Pike had been one of the men who recovered the boat.

Martin Rusk had handled the insurance claim.

Dr. Mercer had signed the toxicology consultation because he was the family's private physician at the time.

The same names kept circling every tragedy.

Alvarez contacted the county where Isabel died and requested the archived case file.

An hour later, a deputy called back.

The original toxicology report was missing.

The evidence locker listed a blood sample that no longer existed.

The investigating officer had retired abroad.

Evelyn sat down because standing suddenly required too much effort.

"They erased her too."

Alvarez shook his head.

"They tried."

He had found something else.

The coroner's office kept scanned billing records even when physical evidence was destroyed.

One invoice showed a private laboratory had performed a second toxicology screen on Isabel's blood.

The client who ordered it was Meridian Clinical Consulting.

The lab still existed.

The owner remembered the case because the results had been unusual.

Isabel's blood contained a powerful sedative that would have made it difficult for her to swim.

The concentration was similar to the drug found in Leo's hospital cup.

Evelyn felt cold from scalp to fingertips.

"So Lenora killed her."

"It means Isabel was drugged before she drowned."

"And Meridian paid for a secret test."

"Yes."

"And buried it."

"It appears that way."

Alvarez's phone rang.

He listened for less than a minute before his face changed.

"Where?"

He stood.

"Do not touch anything until we arrive."

Evelyn followed him toward the elevator.

"What happened?"

"Police found Dr. Mercer."

"Alive?"

Alvarez pressed the button.

"Yes."

Relief hit Evelyn so fast it hurt.

May you like

Then Alvarez finished.

"He was hiding in Adrian's hotel room."
