Chapter 14 - No Heir, No Problem.

The private airfield lay beyond an industrial district where winter fog rolled low across warehouses and empty access roads.
Police units approached without sirens because Owen had already demonstrated what he did when cornered.
Evelyn rode with Alvarez despite three separate officers telling her she should remain with Leo.
Leo had answered that argument himself.
"Go get my dad."
He was now under guard at the archive room with two detectives and a paramedic.
Evelyn had kissed his forehead before leaving.
"This time, you wait for me somewhere that isn't on fire."
Leo almost smiled.
"Deal."
At the airfield, Martin Rusk's sedan stood beside a small private jet with its cabin door open.
The pilot was kneeling on the pavement with his hands behind his head.
Owen held Adrian near the aircraft stairs with a pistol pressed against his ribs.
Martin carried a leather document case and kept shouting that he had diplomatic contacts waiting abroad.
Evelyn watched from behind an airport utility truck as Alvarez negotiated through a loudspeaker.
"Owen, let Adrian walk away."
Owen laughed.
"You found the old server, didn't you?"
Alvarez did not answer.
"I can tell by the number of cars."
Martin grabbed Owen's shoulder.
"Stop talking and get on the plane."
Owen shoved him away.
The partnership that had survived bribery, sabotage, and murder was collapsing under the simple pressure of not trusting each other.
Adrian stood unnaturally still.
His face was bruised, but his eyes searched the perimeter.
He saw Evelyn.
For one second, his expression became furious.
He mouthed something she could not hear.
GO BACK.
Evelyn ignored him.
Martin opened the document case and held up a folder.
"I have records that destroy half the Ashford board."
Alvarez called back.
"Then put them down and live long enough to testify."
Martin looked toward Owen.
"You said there was a route out."
"There was."
"You said Lenora would keep the police occupied."
"Lenora couldn't keep a nine-year-old in a room."
The cruelty of the joke made Evelyn's hands shake.
Then headlights appeared beyond the fence.
A cream-colored car stopped at the security gate.
Lenora stepped out wearing a hospital bandage near her temple.
Alvarez swore.
"Who let her leave?"
A detective checked his radio.
Lenora had refused treatment and disappeared from the ambulance staging area before police realized she was gone.
She walked toward the runway with both hands visible.
"Owen."
He stared at her.
"You should be dead tired by now."
"Give me Adrian."
Martin laughed hysterically.
"Are you insane?"
Lenora did not look at him.
"You killed Isabel."
Owen's face hardened.
"You poured the drink."
"I thought she would sleep through the storm and miss the board meeting."
"You watched me move her onto the boat."
Lenora's voice cracked.
"You told me she would wake up."
Evelyn felt no sympathy.
A person did not become innocent because the crime became larger than the cruelty she originally intended.
Lenora took another step.
"You cut Leo's brakes without telling me."
"And you covered it up."
"Because you threatened Adrian."
"No."
Owen smiled.
"Because the trust was almost yours."
Martin suddenly turned toward the jet.
He ran.
Owen fired at the ground near his feet.
Martin stumbled and dropped the document case.
Papers scattered across the wet runway.
The distraction lasted less than two seconds.
Adrian drove his shoulder backward into Owen's chest.
The gun moved away from his ribs.
Lenora lunged for Owen's wrist.
Alvarez shouted.
Police rushed from cover.
Owen struck Lenora across the face and dragged Adrian toward the plane.
Evelyn saw the pistol swing toward Adrian's back.
She grabbed a red emergency wheel chock from beside the utility truck and threw it with both hands.
The heavy rubber block struck Owen's forearm.
The shot went into the aircraft fuselage.
Adrian dropped.
Officers tackled Owen before he could fire again.
Martin reached the cabin stairs and froze when the pilot stood and blocked the doorway.
"Move!"
The pilot looked at the police surrounding them.
"Absolutely not."
Martin turned and found Alvarez directly behind him.
"Martin Rusk, put your hands where I can see them."
The attorney looked down at the papers blowing across the runway.
For decades he had survived by believing documents could control reality.
Now the documents were evidence.
He raised his hands.
Lenora sat on the pavement with blood at the corner of her mouth.
An officer approached with handcuffs.
She stared at him in disbelief.
"I helped you."
Alvarez faced her.
"You helped yourself."
"I saved Adrian."
"After helping build the conspiracy that killed his wife, crippled his son, stole from his trust, and locked him in a room during a fire."
Lenora's expression collapsed.
"I did not start that fire."
Evelyn stepped closer.
"You did not have to light the match."
Lenora looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
"You spent years making sure men like Owen could do terrible things for you without consequences."
Evelyn's voice stayed calm.
"Eventually, one of them did something even you could not control."
The officer closed the cuffs around Lenora's wrists.
Adrian sat against the landing gear while a paramedic checked him.
Evelyn walked over.
"Leo is safe."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Thank God."
"Thank Leo."
He looked at her.
"He saved the evidence."
The first light of morning began cutting through the fog.
Alvarez approached carrying Martin's leather case.
"We have the trust records."
He opened it.
Inside were forged amendments, offshore account ledgers, insurance documents, and a sealed envelope labeled ISABEL - ORIGINAL.
Evelyn's heartbeat changed.
Alvarez opened the envelope with gloved hands.
It contained the original toxicology report from Isabel's death.
May you like
It also contained a handwritten note signed by Martin.
The final line read: ADRIAN STILL DOESN'T KNOW, AND LENORA WANTS TO KEEP IT THAT WAY.
