Chapter 13 - The Tunnel Under Hawthorne.

The rusted gate filled the entire width of the brick passage, leaving no space for Evelyn to squeeze Leo's wheelchair around it.

Footsteps moved closer behind them.

Leo gripped the wheels.

"He has the key."

Evelyn tested the lock once and knew immediately that force would not open it.

The mechanism was old, iron, and protected behind a heavy plate.

She looked at the wall beside it.

An enamel sign almost hidden by mildew read HAWTHORNE SERVICE TUNNEL - EAST ACCESS.

Evelyn had seen those words before.

Thirty years earlier, cooks used the underground passage to move supplies between the conservatory and the estate during winter storms.

The tunnel had supposedly been sealed when Adrian's father renovated the grounds.

Evelyn reached inside her coat.

The old brass desk key from Isabel's writing table was still there.

It was too small for the gate.

Then she remembered the chapel box.

Isabel had hidden a second flat key beneath the lining, a key Evelyn had assumed belonged to an old filing cabinet.

Alvarez had returned the box to her after cataloging it.

Evelyn had put the flat key on her own ring without knowing why.

She tried it now.

The lock turned.

Leo made a sound halfway between a laugh and a sob.

Evelyn opened the gate, pushed him through, and locked it behind them.

Owen appeared at the far end of the passage seconds later.

His face changed when he saw the gate.

"Open it."

Evelyn kept pushing Leo into darkness.

Owen fired once.

The bullet struck the iron bars and screamed away into brick.

Leo covered his ears.

"Keep moving."

The tunnel sloped downward beneath the frozen grounds.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

Their only light came from Evelyn's phone until the signal vanished completely.

Behind them, metal rang as Owen attacked the gate.

"Where does this go?"

Leo's voice trembled.

"If I remember correctly, under the old kitchen wing."

"The burned part?"

"Yes."

"That's not very comforting."

Despite everything, Evelyn smiled.

"Your mother used to say the same thing about my cooking when I first started here."

Leo gave a tiny laugh.

The sound nearly broke her heart.

They reached a junction where one passage had collapsed beneath blackened timber.

The other turned toward a steel utility door marked ARCHIVE POWER.

Evelyn frowned.

"That wasn't here before."

Leo pointed at a small keypad beside the door.

"Dad showed me this once."

"What is it?"

"Grandpa's backup room."

Hawthorne Hall had once maintained an independent power and communications system because Adrian's father distrusted outside networks.

Most of it had been abandoned after his death.

Evelyn remembered technicians complaining that the old man duplicated everything.

Mail servers.

Financial ledgers.

Security tapes.

Everything.

Leo entered four numbers on the keypad.

The light turned green.

"How did you know that?"

"It's Grandma's birthday."

The steel door opened into a small concrete room humming with emergency power.

Dust covered metal racks, but several server units still blinked.

A monitor displayed a date from the night of the fire.

Evelyn stared at it.

"Leo, what is this?"

He wheeled closer.

"The old cameras."

The estate's new digital recorder had been stolen from the security office.

Nobody had remembered the old system still mirrored portions of the network underground.

Evelyn called Alvarez using the emergency landline mounted beside the door.

He answered on the first ring.

"Where are you?"

"Under Hawthorne Hall."

There was a pause.

"Of course you are."

"We found the old backup server."

His tone changed instantly.

"Do not touch anything."

"Owen is behind us."

"Then touch one thing."

"What?"

"Lock the door."

Evelyn did.

Police entered the conservatory minutes later, guided by the transmitter hidden in the decoy pouch.

Lenora was found unconscious beneath shattered glass but alive.

Owen was gone.

He had abandoned the gate and apparently found another tunnel entrance.

Alvarez's technicians reached the archive room forty minutes later.

They copied the server before viewing anything.

The first recovered clip came from the Hawthorne security office three hours before the gala fire.

Lenora stood beside Owen while Martin Rusk checked documents on a tablet.

Leo appeared briefly in the doorway, asking if he could attend dessert downstairs.

Lenora looked irritated.

"Keep him upstairs until the donors leave."

Owen nodded.

"Door locked?"

Lenora hesitated.

"If you have to."

Evelyn felt fury rise again.

Lenora had not ordered a fire, but she had knowingly surrendered a frightened child to a man she already knew was dangerous.

The clip continued after she left.

Martin turned toward Owen.

"She still thinks this is about control."

Owen smiled.

"Let her."

Martin placed a security badge and two keys on the desk.

"Upstairs alarm loop first."

"And the kitchen?"

"Make it look like the service wiring started it."

The room became silent around the monitor.

Martin's face remained visible as he spoke the sentence that ended any ambiguity.

"No heir, no audit, no problem."

Leo looked at Evelyn.

"They wanted me dead."

Evelyn knelt beside him.

"Yes."

She refused to soften the truth into something a child would later have to unlearn.

"But they failed."

Alvarez's phone rang.

He listened, then swore.

"What happened?"

"Martin Rusk just accessed a private airfield account outside the county."

"He's running."

"And Owen used Lenora's emergency passport file ten minutes ago."

Evelyn stood.

"They're together."

Alvarez shook his head.

"Not exactly."

He showed her a traffic-camera image transmitted to his phone.

Martin's black sedan was headed toward the airfield.

In the passenger seat sat Adrian Ashford, hands bound in front of him.
