Chapter 3 - Behind the Vestry Door.

Noah did not return to the altar.

Instead, he walked directly toward Emily and stopped several feet away from her.

Margaret remained near the vestry door with both hands clasped in front of her.

The officiant watched without speaking.

"I want to talk privately," Noah said.

Emily's shoulders loosened with visible relief.

"Thank you."

She turned toward Anna with a glance that carried a warning.

Noah noticed.

"Anna should come too."

Emily froze.

"Why?"

"Because this started with something you said to her."

Anna wanted to refuse.

She wanted to tell them to continue the ceremony and forget her name for the rest of the day.

Then Margaret moved to her side.

"I'll come with you."

That changed the equation.

Anna rolled forward.

The four of them entered a small vestry lined with dark wooden cabinets and framed photographs of former pastors.

Noah closed the door.

The church beyond it dissolved into muffled whispers.

Emily immediately dropped the bridal smile.

"This is ridiculous."

Noah leaned against the edge of a desk.

"Explain it."

"There were camera angles."

Anna stared at her.

Emily continued quickly.

"The aisle was narrow, the photographer was worried about movement, and Anna told Mom yesterday that crowds make her uncomfortable."

"I never said that."

Emily did not look at her.

"You said you didn't want people staring."

"That's not the same thing."

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

"And the phrase about ruining your perfect wedding?"

Emily gave a short, frustrated laugh.

"I was stressed."

Noah's jaw tightened.

"That's not an explanation."

"What do you want me to say?"

"The truth would be useful."

Emily looked at Anna then.

For the first time, the anger beneath her polished surface became fully visible.

"Fine."

"I wanted one day where every photograph didn't become a conversation about what happened to her."

Anna felt the room tilt emotionally, although nothing moved.

Emily kept going.

"Every family event turns into people asking about Anna."

"What happened?"

"How did she survive?"

"Was it painful?"

"Is she okay?"

Emily pressed the bouquet against the desk.

"I wanted my wedding to be about me."

Anna's voice came out softer than she intended.

"It was about you."

Emily laughed once.

"Not when you're sitting five feet from the aisle."

Noah looked genuinely stunned.

Margaret's face went still.

Anna lowered her eyes to her gloves.

She remembered choosing them because Judith had suggested they would look elegant in photographs.

Now she understood that elegant had really meant less visible.

Noah crossed his arms.

"Did you ask the photographer not to photograph Anna?"

Emily hesitated.

It was less than a second, but everyone saw it.

"I gave him a shot list."

"Was she excluded from it?"

Emily said nothing.

Anna's chest tightened.

Margaret turned toward her.

"Did you know about this?"

Anna shook her head.

Noah pulled his phone from his pocket.

"I'm calling Ben."

Emily stepped forward.

"Do not drag the photographer into this."

"Why not?"

"Because this is already humiliating enough."

Anna looked up.

The words struck her with almost comic precision.

Emily was worried about humiliation now.

Noah's thumb hovered over the screen.

Then someone knocked on the vestry door.

Judith's voice came through it.

"Emily, sweetheart, we need to talk before Noah calls anyone."

Emily went pale.

Not embarrassed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Anna saw it immediately.

May you like

Margaret did too.

And suddenly the seating insult no longer felt like the only secret in the room.
