Chapter 7 - The Account with Anna's Name.

Judith looked as if she wanted to pull the words back into her mouth.
Thomas closed his eyes for a moment.
Emily lowered the bouquet.
Anna felt suddenly detached from the reception hall, as though she were watching the scene through glass.
"What settlement?" she asked again.
Her father answered this time.
"The insurance matter after the fire."
Anna frowned.
"You told me the insurance paid for the house repairs and my hospital bills."
"It did."
Margaret watched Thomas carefully.
"That wasn't her question."
Thomas's jaw tightened.
Anna remembered being seventeen, medicated, exhausted, and surrounded by forms she was too young to understand.
She remembered her parents telling her not to worry about paperwork.
She remembered a lawyer visiting the rehabilitation center twice.
She remembered signing her name where her father pointed.
Then she remembered something else.
A blue envelope.
Her grandfather had brought it to her room and told her it was important.
Judith had taken it home for safekeeping.
Anna had never seen it again.
"Was there money in my name?"
Nobody answered.
That silence was an answer.
Noah looked at Thomas.
"How much?"
"This is none of your business."
"I was about to marry into this family."
Thomas's face hardened.
"Was."
The single word landed heavily.
Emily looked at Noah.
"Don't listen to him."
Noah gave her a stunned look.
"Your father just suggested our wedding is already over, and that's what you say?"
Emily swallowed.
Margaret stepped closer to Anna.
"Were you ever given an accounting of the settlement when you became an adult?"
Anna shook her head.
"I didn't know there was anything to account for."
Margaret's posture changed subtly.
Anna had learned earlier that Margaret had spent three decades working in estate and trust administration before retiring.
Now the controlled anger on her face made more sense.
"Thomas," Margaret said, "what kind of account was created?"
"You are not her attorney."
"Correct."
"Which is why I'm asking a question instead of offering advice."
Judith sat down suddenly at the nearest table.
"It wasn't what you're making it sound like."
Anna rolled toward her.
"Then tell me what it was."
Judith looked at her scarred daughter and finally seemed unable to look away.
"There was a structured settlement."
Anna stopped breathing for a second.
"For me?"
"For your long-term care."
"How much?"
Judith's eyes filled, but Anna felt no comfort from it.
"It changed over time."
"How much, Mom?"
Thomas interrupted.
"The money supported the whole family while we rebuilt our lives."
Anna turned toward him.
"It was for my care."
"And we were your parents."
"That doesn't answer me."
Noah took out his phone again.
"We can get the documents."
Emily moved quickly toward him.
"Noah, stop."
He looked at her.
"Why?"
She hesitated.
Anna saw the answer before Emily gave it.
Her sister knew.
"You knew there was money in my name," Anna said.
Emily's eyes filled with panic.
"Not when we were kids."
"When did you know?"
Emily looked toward Judith.
That glance was enough.
Anna felt something inside her settle into clarity.
"When did you know?"
Emily whispered, "College."
Anna stared at her.
Emily had attended an expensive private university without loans.
Her parents had said her grandfather's investments covered it.
Then came graduate school.
Then the condo.
Then the wedding.
Anna looked slowly around the lavish reception hall.
White roses covered every surface.
Crystal lights glowed beneath fabric-draped ceilings.
A five-tier cake stood under its own spotlight.
Anna's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Did any of this come from my settlement?"
Emily did not answer.
Judith began crying quietly.
Thomas said, "We can explain."
Margaret looked at Anna.
"Before anyone explains anything, you need your own records."
Then the wedding coordinator approached with a tablet in her hand and an anxious expression.
"I'm sorry to interrupt."
She looked at Anna.
"There is a payment issue with the venue account."
Thomas went rigid.
May you like
The coordinator continued.
"The final transfer this morning came from an account labeled Anna Mercer Recovery Trust."
