Chapter 6 - The Fire They Never Named.
Ben's final sentence seemed to strip the last layer of ceremony from the room.
Noah stared at Emily as though he were trying to match the woman before him with the woman he had planned to marry.
Emily looked instead at Judith.
For one brief second, mother and daughter shared the unmistakable look of people who had discussed this before.
Anna saw it.
Margaret saw it too.
"What exactly are you warning her about?" Margaret asked.
Judith straightened.
"I didn't warn anyone."
"You said her name like you were reminding her to stop talking."
Thomas stepped forward.
"This is becoming an interrogation."
Margaret's expression did not change.
"No, Thomas."
"It is becoming a family conversation that should have happened years ago."
Anna's throat tightened.
She had not told Margaret about the fire.
She had not told Noah much either.
Noah knew only that Anna had survived a house fire as a teenager and had spent years in recovery.
Emily had always said the details were private.
That had been convenient for everyone.
Margaret turned gently toward Anna.
"You don't owe us an explanation."
Anna looked across the room at her sister.
Emily's face had become guarded.
For nineteen years, the Mercer family had treated the fire like a locked room.
They entered only when they needed to explain Anna's scars, then left before anyone asked who had been inside with her.
Anna took a breath.
"Emily was there."
Noah looked at her sharply.
Emily's eyes closed.
Anna continued.
"I was ten when she was born, but the fire happened when I was seventeen and she was ten."
"Our parents were at a neighbor's anniversary dinner."
"An electrical fault started in the laundry room after midnight."
Judith whispered, "Anna, please."
Anna did not stop.
"I woke up first."
"I got Emily out through the kitchen door."
"I went back because I thought our dog was still upstairs."
She paused.
The scar along her jaw suddenly felt hot although the room was cool.
"The dog had already gotten out through the side door."
"I didn't know that."
Nobody spoke.
Noah looked at Emily.
"Anna got you out?"
Emily stared at the floor.
"Yes."
The answer was almost inaudible.
Noah's face changed.
Not with dramatic shock.
With something quieter and heavier.
He looked at the wheelchair, then at Anna's gloves, then back at Emily.
"And today you told her she was ruining your photographs?"
Emily's eyes flashed.
"I know what she did for me."
"Do you?"
"I have known every day of my life."
Emily's voice suddenly trembled.
"That is the point."
Anna frowned.
Emily looked at her for the first time without the bridal mask.
"Every room we enter, people look at you and then look at me like I'm supposed to spend the rest of my life apologizing for surviving."
Anna felt anger rise through the hurt.
"I never asked you to apologize."
"You never had to."
Emily pointed toward the guests.
"Everyone else does it for you."
"They call you brave."
"They call you selfless."
"Then they look at me like I'm the reason you look the way you do."
Anna's voice stayed steady.
"You were ten years old."
"I never blamed you."
Emily's expression twisted with something that looked almost like grief.
"Maybe you didn't."
"Mom did."
The room stopped.
Judith's face went white.
Anna slowly turned toward her mother.
"What did you tell her?"
Judith opened her mouth and then closed it.
Thomas stepped between them.
"This is not the place."
Margaret's voice cut through him.
"Then choose the place."
Thomas looked furious.
"You know nothing about our family."
"I'm learning quickly."
Emily took one step backward.
Her bouquet trembled in her hand.
"Mom told me Anna lost everything because she chose me."
Anna stared at Judith.
Emily continued.
"She said I had to make something beautiful out of my life because Anna never got hers back."
Anna felt the old family story rearrange itself inside her.
The guilt she had never placed on Emily had apparently been placed there anyway.
Then Judith said the sentence that changed the direction of the entire day.
"We did what we had to do after the settlement."
