Chapter 13 - The Woman in Blue Breaks.

Celeste stared at her mother's final line for a long time.

No one moved to pick up the letter.

The room that had once belonged to Margaret Harrington now seemed too small for all the secrets inside it.

Ethan finally bent and lifted the pages.

"Do you want me to read it?"

Celeste's eyes filled, but her voice remained hard.

"No."

"Then I will not."

He placed the letter on the vanity.

That small act of restraint seemed to anger her more than if he had forced the words on her.

"You think this makes you noble?"

"No."

"You think protecting Lily makes you different from me?"

Ethan stared at her.

"I think protecting Lily is my responsibility."

Celeste stepped forward.

"I protected this family for years."

"I fixed Mother's mistakes."

"I sat through meetings you skipped because you were chasing another acquisition across the world."

"I kept the foundation alive when donors wanted to leave."

"I handled Hannah's funeral arrangements because you could barely speak."

Ethan's expression changed at his wife's name.

Celeste saw it and pushed harder.

"And what did I get?"

"A fixed trust payment and a polite thank-you while a baby inherited the future."

Mara stood in the doorway, pale but steady.

"Lily didn't take anything from you."

Celeste turned on her.

"Stay out of this."

Mara did not move.

"You put a brooch in my room."

"You locked a frightened child behind a door."

"You tried to make everyone believe I was dangerous because I picked her up after you pushed her."

Celeste's face crumpled for one second.

"I did not mean for her to fall."

The admission silenced everyone.

Ethan took a slow breath.

"But you did push her."

Celeste looked toward the floor.

"She would not move away from the piano."

"I saw the keys."

"I knew Bell had disobeyed me."

"I knew if that drawer opened, everything could come apart."

Ethan's voice became almost a whisper.

"So you frightened a three-year-old to protect yourself."

Celeste looked at him with tears finally running down her face.

"I was trying to protect what I built."

"With Mother's money?"

She flinched.

The outside attorney entered quietly and handed Ethan a printed report.

Preliminary tracing of the Calder deposit showed that the missing funds had gone toward covering losses in two private investments tied to Celeste.

Nothing in the report proved every allegation, and Ethan said so.

Celeste did not deny the debt.

"I was going to replace it after the sale."

"With money from selling the house you had no authority to sell."

"I would have fixed it."

Ethan shook his head.

"That sentence is how people keep digging after they know they should stop."

Celeste reached suddenly for the metal case on the vanity.

The security officer stepped between them before she touched it.

She froze.

For a terrible second, everyone expected another explosion.

Instead, Celeste's shoulders dropped.

"Fine."

"Take the house."

"Take the board."

"Take the perfect little future Mother wanted."

Ethan's face softened, but not enough to erase what had happened.

"This was never about taking something from you."

"It is about stopping what you are doing."

Celeste laughed through tears.

"And then what?"

"You call the police?"

"You drag my name through every paper in Connecticut?"

Ethan glanced toward Lily's nursery wing.

"I am going to protect my daughter, preserve the evidence, and follow the advice of independent counsel."

"What happens after that depends on facts, not family pride."

Celeste looked at him for a long time.

Then she finally picked up Margaret's letter.

Her hands shook as she unfolded it.

Halfway down the first page, she stopped reading.

The color left her face.

"She knew about Coventry Street," she whispered.

Ethan stepped closer.

"What was there?"

Celeste raised her eyes.

May you like

"Not just the trust papers."

"Something that could destroy Daniel too."
