Chapter 5 - The Blue Ledger.

No one slept normally at Harrington House that night.

Ethan moved Lily into the guest suite beside his own room and asked Mara to remain nearby.

He did not ask Celeste to leave.

Not yet.

He wanted her close enough to watch.

At midnight, he found Mrs. Bell in the laundry room searching through an old cabinet.

"The blue ledger," she said before he could ask.

"Your mother kept household records in different colors."

"Green was staff payroll."

"Red was charitable expenses."

"Blue was private property access."

Ethan stared at her.

"Private property access?"

"Jewelry, documents, locked rooms, things she did not want confused with normal household business."

They searched the cabinet and found nothing.

Mrs. Bell led him to the basement archive room.

Boxes filled the shelves from floor to ceiling.

Dust softened every label except one recent strip of clean wood near the back wall.

A box had been removed.

"Was the ledger stored here?" Ethan asked.

Mrs. Bell nodded.

"After your mother died."

A quiet sound came from the corridor.

Ethan switched off the overhead light.

Footsteps approached.

Someone stopped outside the archive room.

The door handle moved once.

Then the footsteps retreated.

Ethan opened the door and stepped into the hallway.

He saw only the edge of a dark blue skirt disappearing around the stairwell.

Mrs. Bell whispered behind him.

"She knows what we're looking for."

The next morning, Celeste appeared at breakfast perfectly dressed and perfectly calm.

"You look tired," she told Ethan.

"I had a productive night."

Her spoon paused over her coffee.

"Did you?"

Before he could answer, two uniformed security officers entered through the service hall.

Behind them stood Daniel Walsh.

Mara appeared in the doorway with Lily.

One officer spoke politely.

"Mr. Harrington, we received a report of missing family property."

Ethan looked at Celeste.

"What property?"

Celeste folded her napkin.

"Mother's sapphire brooch."

Mara's face drained of color.

"I have never seen any sapphire brooch."

Celeste looked at the officers.

"Search her room."

Ethan stood so quickly his chair scraped the floor.

"No."

Celeste smiled coldly.

"If she has nothing to hide, why protect her?"

"Because this is my house too."

Daniel stepped between them with both hands raised.

"We can handle this calmly."

Ethan turned on him.

"Did you authorize this?"

"Celeste has operational authority over household security."

"Not anymore."

He took out his phone and called the head of the private security firm directly.

Within minutes, the officers were instructed to stand down pending Ethan's review.

Celeste's composure cracked.

"You cannot simply interfere with an investigation."

"I can interfere with you using security to intimidate my staff."

Mara looked close to tears, but Lily squeezed her hand.

Then Mrs. Bell entered carrying a small blue book.

Everyone turned.

"I found it," she said.

Celeste's face became blank.

Mrs. Bell placed the ledger in front of Ethan.

It had been hidden inside an old silver-service case in the pantry, wrapped in newspaper dated three years earlier.

The entries were written in Margaret Harrington's hand.

On October ninth, four items were listed as removed from the dressing-room safe.

Original trust amendment.

Bank witness certificate.

Beneficiary schedule.

Audio statement.

The next line recorded their return at 4:15 p.m.

The following morning, someone had accessed the safe again.

The initials in the signature column were C.H.

Celeste Harrington.

Ethan raised his eyes.

Celeste did not look at the ledger.

She looked at Mara.

"Search her room anyway."

May you like

That was when Ethan realized the accusation against Mara had never been about a brooch.

It was about buying time to find whatever the ledger had just revealed.
