Chapter 7 - The Woman at the Gate.

Celeste did not deny entering Mara's room.

Instead, she changed the meaning of what everyone had seen.

"I found the brooch in the linen cabinet and placed it where I believed it belonged."

Mara stared at her.

"In my underwear drawer?"

Celeste ignored her.

Ethan held Lily against his chest and felt his anger settle into something colder.

"Pack a bag."

Celeste blinked.

"Excuse me?"

"You are moving to the east guest wing until I decide what happens next."

"You cannot confine me in my own home."

"I am not confining you."

"You are free to leave."

"But you are not going near my daughter, Mara's room, the archive, or Mother's belongings."

Celeste laughed again, but this time there was panic under it.

"You have lost your mind."

Ethan looked toward the disabled nursery camera.

"Maybe."

"But I am finally paying attention."

At noon, the security gate called the house.

An elderly woman named Nora Chase was asking to see Ethan Harrington.

Celeste, who had been listening from the staircase, moved toward the intercom.

"Send her away."

Ethan reached the panel first.

"Let her in."

Celeste turned sharply.

"You don't even know who she is."

"I know the name."

It had appeared in the blue ledger beside the words bank witness.

Nora Chase entered the mansion ten minutes later carrying a weathered document case.

She was in her seventies, silver-haired, straight-backed, and unimpressed by the grandeur around her.

Her eyes went immediately to the grand piano.

"Margaret said you would find the key eventually."

Ethan felt a chill.

"You knew about it?"

"I knew she planned to leave instructions."

Nora looked at Celeste.

"I did not know whether anyone would let you read them."

Celeste folded her arms.

"You have no right to come into this house and imply things about me."

Nora's expression barely changed.

"I am not implying anything."

"I am here because Ethan called my former bank this morning and asked for the witness connected to an October ninth trust amendment."

Ethan led Nora into the library.

Celeste followed despite being told not to.

Mara stayed with Lily in the adjoining morning room, close enough to hear but far enough to keep the child away from the argument.

Nora opened her case and removed a photocopy of a notarized receipt.

"I was a senior trust officer at Hartford Federal."

"Margaret asked me to witness a new beneficiary schedule and an amendment to the Harrington family trust."

Daniel Walsh, who had returned after Ethan demanded his full files, looked visibly uncomfortable.

"Our firm was not involved in that amendment."

Nora turned to him.

"That was deliberate."

Daniel stiffened.

"Why?"

"Because Margaret believed someone inside the existing legal structure was reporting her plans to Celeste."

Celeste stood.

"This is slander."

Nora calmly placed another page on the table.

It was a copy of Margaret's written instruction to the bank.

Ethan read it in silence.

The language was formal, but one sentence was brutally clear.

No information regarding the October ninth amendment is to be disclosed to my daughter Celeste Harrington or to counsel acting at her direction.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face had lost its color.

"I was never acting at her direction."

Celeste turned on him.

"Don't be pathetic."

The room went silent.

Celeste realized what she had said.

Ethan did too.

Nora continued as though nothing had happened.

"The bank kept a duplicate certification page, but not the full trust amendment."

"Margaret retained the original."

"Do you know what the amendment did?" Ethan asked.

Nora hesitated.

"I know the broad purpose because I was required to verify the beneficiary structure."

Celeste moved toward the door.

Ethan blocked her path.

"Stay."

Nora looked directly at him.

"Your mother changed the controlling beneficiary of the family property."

Ethan's heart pounded.

"To whom?"

May you like

Nora glanced through the glass doors toward the three-year-old girl sitting on Mara's lap.

"To Lily."
