Chapter 11 - Pier Nine.

.Anna entered Pier Nine through the warehouse's side door with both hands visible.
The false memory card rested inside her apron pocket.
Luca remained outside with two trusted men, waiting for Special Agent Keene's team to reach the riverfront.
Anna hated every second of that plan, but Victor had cameras covering the building and would recognize Luca immediately.
The warehouse smelled of salt water, diesel fuel, and rust.
A single row of hanging lamps illuminated a path between stacked shipping crates.
"Victor!"
Her voice echoed through the enormous space.
A metal door opened on the upper catwalk.
Victor appeared with Sofia beside him.
The little girl's hands were tied in front of her with plastic cord.
She was standing.
That fact almost broke Anna.
Sofia's knees trembled, but she was standing without the pink wheelchair Victor had used to define her for years.
"Mama!"
Victor placed a hand on Sofia's shoulder.
"Stay where you are."
Anna forced herself not to run.
"Let her come down."
"The card first."
Anna removed the decoy.
Victor smiled.
"You always were stubborn."
"You always were afraid of women who could read bank statements."
His smile vanished.
Anna saw the old hatred clearly now.
Victor had not destroyed her because of love, jealousy, or some grand family secret.
He had destroyed her because she had discovered the machinery of his power.
That made his cruelty smaller and somehow worse.
"Throw it onto the floor."
Anna obeyed.
Victor sent one of his men down the stairs to retrieve it.
The man inserted the card into a small reader.
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then the screen displayed an encrypted folder Anna and Luca had prepared.
Victor relaxed.
"Good."
He pushed Sofia toward the staircase.
Anna took one step forward.
"Slowly, Bluebird."
Sofia looked directly at her.
Something passed between them.
At the banquet, the nickname had reopened Anna's memory.
Now it became a signal.
Sofia moved down three steps, then deliberately dropped to her knees.
"I can't!"
Victor cursed and leaned toward her.
Sofia grabbed the railing and kicked backward with both feet.
Her heel struck Victor's shin.
He stumbled.
Anna ran.
One of Victor's men raised a gun from behind a crate.
A shot rang out from the loading door.
Luca had entered.
The gunman dropped behind cover.
"Sofia, down!"
Luca's voice thundered through the warehouse.
Victor seized Sofia by the back of her dress and dragged her against him.
He pressed a pistol beneath her chin.
Anna stopped at the bottom of the stairs.
"Look at me, Victor."
"I am looking at the woman who ruined everything."
"No. You're looking at the woman you failed to erase."
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Victor's eyes flicked toward the loading doors.
He realized the card was a decoy.
"You lied to me."
Anna took another step.
"I learned from you."
Victor fired at the ceiling, and Sofia screamed.
Then he dragged her toward the rear catwalk leading to the river crane.
Luca started after them.
Victor shouted, "One more step and she falls."
The catwalk ended above black water twenty feet below.
Victor backed toward the edge with Sofia in his grip.
Anna saw the terror in her daughter's face.
Then Sofia looked down at her own feet.
She whispered something only Victor could hear.
His expression changed.
"What did you say?"
Sofia looked up at him.
"My mama taught me not to be afraid of falling."
May you like
Then she went completely limp.
Victor lost his balance.
