Chapter 7 - The Nurse Who Remembered Her Name.

.By dawn, Luca had moved Anna and Sofia to a secure apartment above a closed restaurant in Manhattan.
Only three people knew the address.
Rosa stayed with Sofia while Luca and Anna examined the notebook page by page.
Most of the entries described Sofia's treatment, but several margins contained strings of numbers Anna did not understand.
Luca recognized them as account references.
"Victor was moving money through medical charities."
Anna looked at him.
"Your foundation?"
"Some of it."
His voice carried shame rather than surprise.
"I built legitimate businesses because I wanted Sofia to inherit something clean. Victor kept telling me the old operations were necessary to protect us."
Anna studied the man she might once have loved.
"Were they?"
Luca met her eyes.
"No. I just took too long to admit it."
A telephone number had been written beneath the final account code.
Anna called it from a secure line.
An elderly woman answered on the fourth ring.
When Anna said the name Elena Moretti, the woman began to cry.
Her name was Nora Bell, a retired trauma nurse from Pennsylvania.
She agreed to meet them at a church in Queens.
Luca wanted Anna to stay behind.
Anna refused.
"I spent four years not knowing who I was. I am not hiding from the first person who might know why."
They left Sofia with Rosa and two trusted guards.
At the church, Nora sat alone in the last pew holding a yellow envelope.
She stared at Anna for several seconds before standing.
"I knew you were alive."
Anna's knees weakened.
Nora explained that four years earlier Dr. Voss had brought an unidentified woman to a private rehabilitation center after midnight.
The woman had severe head trauma, burns on one shoulder, and no identification.
Voss claimed she had been found wandering after an unrelated highway accident.
"But you kept saying one name whenever the medication wore off," Nora said.
"Sofia."
Anna covered her mouth.
Nora had searched news reports and found the Moretti crash.
When she confronted Voss, he threatened her license and family.
She secretly copied one page of Anna's intake file before she resigned.
The yellow envelope contained the page.
A handwritten order at the bottom authorized memory-suppressing sedatives for months beyond normal emergency use.
The signature belonged to Voss.
Another line listed the guarantor for the private bills.
Victor Sanz.
Luca's face turned cold.
"This is enough to destroy both of them."
Nora shook her head.
"There is more."
She said Anna had begun remembering Sofia during rehabilitation.
One night Anna tried to leave.
The next morning she was transferred under a new name.
Nora never saw her again.
Anna whispered, "Anna Mercer."
Nora nodded.
"They did not just hide you. They built you a second life."
A sharp crack sounded from the church entrance.
One of Luca's guards collapsed.
Luca grabbed Anna and pulled her behind a stone column.
Victor's men entered through both side doors.
Nora clutched the envelope.
Anna heard a phone vibrate inside Luca's coat.
Rosa's name appeared on the screen.
He answered.
There was only breathing on the other end.

Then Victor spoke.
"You left your daughter with the wrong people."
