Chapter 15 - The Sunshine They Chose.

.One year after the banquet, the Grand Bellmont ballroom glowed beneath the same three crystal chandeliers.
This time Anna entered through the front doors as a guest.
Her auburn hair was tied back the way it had been on the night Sofia found her, but she wore a simple dark green dress instead of a waitress uniform.
Luca waited near the center of the room in a dark suit and black shirt.
He looked almost exactly as he had one year earlier.
The difference was in the way people approached him.
There was less fear.
There were fewer guards.
The Moretti Foundation had been reorganized under independent oversight and now funded trauma rehabilitation, patient advocacy, and legal support for families affected by medical fraud.
Nora Bell sat at the first table as an honored guest.
Rosa cried before the program even began.
Agent Keene attended without a badge visible and pretended not to notice when Luca thanked her publicly.
Then the ballroom doors opened again.
Sofia entered in a light blue princess dress.
She was eight now.
A sparkly clip held half her light brown hair away from her face.
The pink wheelchair rolled behind her, pushed by her physical therapist in case she needed it later.
Sofia did not use it for the walk down the aisle between the tables.
She used two slim forearm crutches decorated with silver stars.
Every step was measured.
Every step was hers.
Anna covered her mouth.
Luca whispered, "She kept this a surprise."
Sofia reached them and grinned.
"I told you I would walk into the party next time."
Anna crouched and hugged her.
"You did more than walk."
Sofia looked at Luca.
"Now it's your turn."
Luca blinked.
"My turn for what?"
Sofia pointed toward the stage.
A piano waited beneath the chandeliers.
Luca looked genuinely frightened.
Anna laughed.
"You promised her."
"I was under emotional pressure."
"That's still a promise, Daddy."
The ballroom erupted in warm laughter.
Luca surrendered and sat at the piano.
He could play only four chords, and everyone quickly discovered that he was not gifted.
Sofia did not care.
Anna stood beside him.
She began the lullaby softly.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine."
This time the melody did not stop a room in shock.
It invited the room to listen.
Sofia sang the altered ending that only their family knew.
When the final three-note hum faded, Luca looked at Anna.
For months he had never asked her to remarry him.
Their original marriage had remained legally valid once her identity and survival were established, but the paperwork had never been the real question.
Anna had stayed because Luca changed his life when no one could guarantee she would stay.
She had stayed because Sofia deserved parents who chose honesty over fear.
She had stayed because slowly, painfully, love returned without demanding that memory do all the work.
Luca reached for her hand.
"Still here?"
It was the question he asked every morning, half teasing and half afraid.
Anna squeezed his fingers.
"Still here."
Sofia leaned between them.
"Good, because I am not doing another reunion. The first one was exhausting."
They laughed.
Later, when the banquet ended, Sofia asked to walk across the empty ballroom one more time.
Anna moved beside her without touching unless needed.
Luca followed on the other side.
Halfway across, Sofia stopped beneath the largest chandelier.
"This is where I heard you."
Anna looked up at the crystal light.
"And this is where you found me."
Sofia shook her head.
"No."
She took Anna's hand, then Luca's.
"This is where we found each other."
They continued toward the doors together.
Behind them, the chandeliers slowly dimmed.
Ahead of them, morning light waited beyond the glass.
For four years, a song had survived inside Anna when almost everything else had been stolen.
In the end, it had not performed a miracle.
May you like
It had done something stronger.
It had led a mother back to her daughter, a father back to the truth, and a broken family toward a life they finally chose for themselves.
