Chapter 1 - The Room With No Exit.

.The hospital room smelled of disinfectant, cold air, and something Rebecca Hale could not name until she saw her daughter’s face.
Captain Rebecca Hale had crossed three time zones in a white Navy uniform because Emma’s message had contained only four words.
Mom, please come now.
The door was still swinging behind Rebecca when she reached the bed.
Emma flinched before she recognized her.
That single movement hurt Rebecca more than the bruises.
Emma had always run toward her mother, even at nineteen, even after arguments, even after Rebecca’s longest deployments.
Now she shrank beneath a thin hospital blanket and stared at the doorway as though someone might drag her back through it.
Rebecca lowered herself beside the bed.
“Emma, look at me.”
Emma tried.
Her lip trembled.
“They wouldn’t let me leave.”
The words were barely audible.
Rebecca’s training taught her to observe before reacting.
She noticed the missing call button cord.
She noticed Emma’s purse was nowhere in sight.
She noticed the chart tablet at the foot of the bed had a red restriction banner across the screen.
Most of all, she noticed the fear that returned to Emma’s eyes every time footsteps passed in the hallway.
“Who wouldn’t let you leave?”
Emma swallowed.
Before she could answer, the door opened again.
A blonde woman in a burgundy tailored suit entered as if she owned the floor.
Gold bracelets touched softly at her wrist.
A broad-shouldered man in a charcoal suit followed one pace behind her.
Rebecca knew the woman immediately.
Victoria Mercer.
Chairwoman of Mercer Health Foundation.
Donor to three hospitals in the region.
Mother of Emma’s former fiancé, Julian.
Rebecca rose.
Victoria’s eyes moved over the medals on Rebecca’s chest without interest.
“I was told you arrived without authorization.”
Rebecca stared at her.
“I’m her mother.”
Victoria gave a small, dismissive smile.
“Your rank means nothing here.”
The man behind her shifted closer to the door.
Rebecca looked at his stance and understood at once that he was not hospital security.
Emma whispered from the bed.
“Mom, don’t argue with her.”
That frightened Rebecca more than the threat.
Victoria walked toward the bedside monitor.
“She is confused, emotionally unstable, and under observation.”
“I’m not confused,” Emma said.
Victoria did not even look at her.
Rebecca’s gaze hardened.
“Who ordered the restriction?”
“The attending physician.”
“Name.”
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
“You have no jurisdiction here, Captain.”
Rebecca reached into her uniform coat and removed a modern black smartphone.
She did not raise her voice.
She did not need to.
She tapped one contact that almost no one outside her command knew existed.
The line connected on the first ring.
“This is Captain Rebecca Hale.”
Victoria’s expression changed by half a degree.
Rebecca watched that tiny change and knew she had finally found fear in the room.
“Activate the federal liaison.”
The man at the door stopped moving.
Emma’s breathing quickened.
Victoria suddenly reached into her handbag.
Her hand came out closed.
She stepped toward Emma.
Rebecca moved between them.
“Open your hand.”
Victoria ignored her.
She lunged past Rebecca toward the bed.
Her palm opened.
Several dark pills lay against her skin.
Emma recoiled.
“No.”
Victoria’s fingers moved toward Emma’s mouth.
Rebecca caught her wrist in midair.
Everything in the room became still.
The pills trembled in Victoria’s hand.
Rebecca’s voice dropped to a level that made the man at the door step backward.
May you like
“You just made this federal.”
And for the first time, Victoria Mercer looked as if she believed her.
