Chapter 8 - The Building Began to Turn.

.By noon, the hospital no longer felt like Victoria Mercer’s territory.
Internal compliance officers arrived first.
Then outside counsel.
Then a state health investigator who had been contacted after the forged hold was discovered.
Doors that had opened instantly for Victoria began closing.
Badge permissions were suspended.
Executive accounts were locked.
Security cameras were copied before anyone could overwrite them.
Rebecca stayed beside Emma through all of it.
She did not want the investigation to turn her daughter into evidence instead of a person.
Emma was exhausted.
Her fear came in waves.
Sometimes she answered questions clearly.
Sometimes a footstep outside made her grip Rebecca’s hand.
At one point she whispered, “What if nobody believes me because they’re important?”
Rebecca squeezed her fingers.
“Importance is not immunity.”
Emma looked toward the window.
“That sounds like something you say to sailors.”
“It is.”
“Does it work?”
“Only if somebody enforces it.”
A knock came at the door.
Agent Chen entered carrying a sealed property bag.
Inside was Emma’s black phone.
They had found it in a linen cart near a service elevator.
The case was cracked.
The screen had been wiped clean.
Emma stared at it.
“Did they erase everything?”
“Maybe,” Chen said.
“But erased is not always gone.”
Paul Ivers began a forensic extraction in a secured room downstairs.
Security footage showed Crowe entering the service corridor with the phone and leaving without it.
That alone placed him in the chain of possession.
Then another camera revealed something nobody expected.
Julian Mercer had entered the hospital at 5:41 that morning through a staff entrance.
He wore scrubs beneath a winter coat.
His borrowed badge belonged to a pharmacy technician who had reported it missing two days earlier.
Emma went pale when she saw the still image.
“He told me he was in New York.”
Rebecca studied the photograph.
“What did he do after entering?”
Agent Chen swiped to the next image.
Julian had gone directly to a restricted pharmacy preparation room.
Seven minutes later, he emerged carrying a small white medication envelope.
The envelope was the exact size of the packet found in Victoria’s handbag after security searched it.
Victoria had claimed she purchased the pills from a private clinic.
Now that claim was collapsing.
Dr. Reeve entered a few minutes later with another discovery.
The pharmacy room had an automated inventory camera.
The footage had not been deleted because it was stored on a separate vendor system.
Julian could be seen removing a bottle from a locked research cabinet.
The label was partially visible.
M-17.
Agent Chen’s expression changed.
“What is M-17?”
Reeve looked troubled.
“An investigational compound used in a discontinued sleep-study protocol.”
Rebecca stared at him.
“Why was it still here?”
“It should have been transferred for destruction months ago.”
Emma’s voice was almost inaudible.
“What would it do?”
Reeve chose his words carefully.
“It could cause severe drowsiness, confusion, and memory disruption.”
Rebecca turned toward the sealed evidence bag.
Victoria had tried to put those pills into Emma’s mouth after federal authorities were contacted.
That no longer looked like panic.
It looked like an attempt to make a witness unreliable.
Then Agent Ross entered with urgent news.
Julian Mercer’s car had just been found in the hospital parking garage.

The driver’s door was open.
And there was fresh blood on the steering wheel.
