Chapter 10 - The House With One Locked Room.

.The investigators did not send Rebecca to Mercer House.
She wanted to go.
Every protective instinct in her told her to stay close to the evidence and closer to anyone who might threaten Emma.
Agent Ross told her the opposite.
“Your daughter needs one person in this building who is not collecting evidence from her.”
Rebecca understood.
She hated that he was right.
A federal search team obtained authority to enter Mercer House based on Julian’s statement, Emma’s recovered photographs, and the hospital evidence.
Rebecca remained at the bedside.
For two hours, nothing happened.
Those were the longest hours of the day.
Emma ate half a cup of soup.
Rebecca answered no calls except those from investigators.
Lena returned with clean clothes for Emma and quietly replaced the missing call-button cord.
That small act almost made Emma cry.
At 3:12 p.m., Ross called.
They had found the locked room.
Behind a false wall in a private study was a narrow archive with metal shelves, old tax records, contract folders, and handwritten ledgers.
One ledger contained payments matching the false invoices Emma had discovered.
Another contained initials beside dates and dollar amounts.
Some initials belonged to hospital administrators.
Others belonged to consultants and lobbying firms.
One belonged to M.R.
Dr. Malcolm Reeve.
Rebecca looked through the glass at the administrator standing at the nurses’ station.
He was speaking to compliance officers.
“He said he didn’t know.”
Ross replied carefully.
“We do not yet know what the initials mean.”
Rebecca respected the caution.
Then Ross added something else.
The search team found a folder labeled E.H.
Inside were copies of Emma’s school schedule, travel plans, banking information, and photographs taken from a distance.
Rebecca went cold.
“How long?”
“About four months.”
Emma heard enough from Rebecca’s side of the conversation to understand.
“They were watching me?”
Rebecca ended the call and sat closer.
“Yes.”
Emma’s eyes filled with anger now, not only fear.
“That’s why Julian always knew where I was.”
She remembered small things.
A surprise coffee outside class.
A car appearing near the library.
Victoria mentioning a meeting Emma had never discussed with her.
What had looked like attention now looked like surveillance.
Then Emma remembered something else.
“The locked room had a second cabinet.”
Rebecca called Ross back.
The agents checked.
Inside the cabinet they found several prepaid phones.
One phone contained messages between Victoria and a contact saved only as DOCTOR.
The messages discussed Emma’s admission, sedation, and “signature readiness.”
The final message had been sent that morning.
IF MOTHER ARRIVES, MOVE TO PLAN B.
Rebecca stared at the words Ross forwarded through a secure channel.
“What was Plan B?”
Ross did not know.
Then every light in Emma’s room flickered once.
The monitor beeped.

The hallway went dark.
And somewhere beyond the door, a fire alarm began to ring.
