Chapter 4 - The Apron in the Furnace.

Roman returned to the ballroom before dawn.

The chandeliers had been dimmed, but the broken mirror remained untouched behind police tape.

Workers had removed the blood and champagne from the marble, leaving the room too clean to be honest.

Roman's security chief, Malik Grant, waited beside the service corridor.

“The venue manager says the police took every item.”

“The police say they never received the apron.”

“Then someone here is lying.”

Malik had served with Roman in the military before becoming the only employee who could tell him when anger was becoming stupidity.

He led Roman to the basement surveillance room.

The digital archive showed a seven-minute gap beginning thirty seconds before Celeste confronted Della.

The technician claimed a power fluctuation caused it.

Malik opened the maintenance log.

“There was no fluctuation.”

Roman studied the list of staff who accessed the room.

One temporary security guard had signed in under the name Tomas Rios.

Della's dead wedding witness had apparently entered the ballroom at eight fourteen that evening.

Roman pulled the employee photograph.

The face belonged to a stranger.

“Find him.”

Malik copied the records while Roman searched the service hallway.

A faint brown smear marked the wall near the laundry chute.

He followed it to the industrial level below the kitchens.

The furnace room door was unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled of scorched cloth.

Roman opened the incinerator inspection hatch and found pale fabric curled among the ash.

A small metal pin rested near the edge.

He reached in with a pair of tongs.

The name tag was blackened but readable.

Della.

Malik photographed everything before they touched more.

Beneath the remains of the apron, Roman found a warped plastic rectangle no larger than a fingernail.

“A memory card.”

“Maybe.”

Malik sealed it inside an evidence pouch.

Footsteps sounded in the corridor.

A catering supervisor appeared and froze when she saw them.

Her name was Renee Calder.

Roman remembered her arguing with Della before the gala.

“Who ordered the apron destroyed?”

Renee shook her head too quickly.

“I do not know what you mean.”

Roman held up the burned name tag.

Her face collapsed.

“They said it contained contaminated blood.”

“Who said?”

“A man from the foundation.”

“What man?”

“He showed credentials.”

Malik stepped closer.

“Describe him.”

Renee looked toward the door.

“He had a scar near his left ear and a silver wedding band.”

Roman knew the description.

Graham Voss, Celeste's older brother, served as chief financial officer of the Blackwood Foundation.

He had shaken Roman's hand at the gala and expressed concern about Evan's death.

Roman felt the shape of the conspiracy expanding.

“Did he take anything from the apron?”

Renee nodded.

“A small envelope.”

“What happened to it?”

“He put it in his pocket.”

“Why did you obey him?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“My daughter receives treatment through a foundation grant.”

The answer made Roman angrier than bribery would have.

Graham had weaponized a child's medicine to destroy evidence.

Malik escorted Renee to a secure office and contacted Naomi.

Roman entered the ballroom again and stood before the shattered mirror.

Celeste had not pushed Della because of spilled champagne.

She had recognized the woman carrying Evan's child and needed chaos to steal whatever Evan sent.

Roman examined the frame.

One surviving mirror fragment reflected only half his face.

A tiny red light blinked above the carved gold leaves.

He climbed onto a chair and found a concealed camera no larger than a button.

The venue manager claimed ignorance when confronted.

The camera was not connected to the ballroom system.

Its signal traveled through a private wireless network registered to the Blackwood Foundation.

Malik accessed the receiver from a locked office used by event sponsors.

The recording existed, but someone had encrypted it.

“Can you open it?”

“Not quickly.”

“Open it carefully.”

Roman returned to the hospital with the burned name tag and no certainty that the memory card had survived.

Della was asleep under guard.

Her face looked younger without fear tightening it.

Roman placed the evidence bag where she could not see it when she woke.

Naomi arrived with coffee and a folder.

“Celeste filed for a protective order.”

“Against Della?”

“Against both of you.”

Roman laughed once without humor.

“She assaulted a pregnant woman.”

“She claims Della has stalked the family for months and you are mentally unstable from grief.”

“What does she want?”

“To prevent us from contacting foundation employees or accessing internal records.”

Roman looked at Della.

“She wants time to erase the rest.”

Naomi opened the folder.

“There is more.”

Graham had called an emergency board meeting for noon.

The agenda included a vote to declare Evan's trust without a lawful heir.

If approved, control of Evan's shares would transfer to Celeste under a partnership agreement nobody in the family remembered signing.

Roman understood the urgency at last.

The unborn child did not merely threaten Celeste's reputation.

The baby threatened her ownership of one-third of the Blackwood empire.

Della opened her eyes.

Roman told her about the apron and the emergency vote.

She listened without interrupting.

“Evan expected this.”

“How?”

“He said the moment they learned about the baby, they would rush the trust.”

Della reached beneath her pillow and removed a folded piece of paper.

A nurse had found it inside the lining of her uniform dress after surgery.

The paper contained only six handwritten numbers and a sentence in Evan's script.

The mirror remembers what the room denies.

Roman looked toward Malik.

“The hidden camera.”

Malik nodded.

“The numbers may be the encryption key.”

He entered them into his laptop.

The first five failed.

The sixth unlocked the file.

Video filled the screen.

The camera showed Celeste confronting Della from above the mirror.

It captured every word, including the threat that Della had been warned to disappear.

Then another figure appeared in the reflection before the shove.

Graham stood near the service door, watching.

He touched his ear and spoke into a concealed microphone.

Celeste pushed Della exactly three seconds later.

The shove had been ordered.

Malik advanced the recording frame by frame.

As Della struck the mirror, Graham stepped forward and removed an envelope from her falling apron.

Then the footage showed something none of them expected.

A second man took the envelope from Graham and turned toward the camera.

Roman recognized his own uncle, Charles Blackwood, chairman of the family trust.

Charles had raised Roman and Evan after their father died.

He had also identified Evan's body after the crash.
