Chapter 9 - Haven House.

Haven House stood behind iron gates on a wooded mountain road, disguised as a private recovery center for women.

Snow began falling as Roman's convoy approached, turning the property peaceful from a distance.

Federal agents stopped at the gate when an electronic message warned that the facility stored volatile medical oxygen.

A forced entry could trigger an explosion.

Roman recognized the delay tactic.

Charles wanted time to move Della and Sophie.

Evelyn rode in the second vehicle under protective custody.

She knew an older service road used before the main gate was constructed.

Malik, his shoulder bandaged, led Roman through the trees toward the rear buildings.

Naomi remained with the agents coordinating warrants and emergency medical teams.

The service road ended near a stone chapel.

Inside, rows of empty bassinets stood beneath stained-glass windows.

Dust covered most of them, but one held a fresh yellow blanket.

Roman found Della's hospital bracelet beneath it.

A speaker crackled overhead.

Charles's voice filled the chapel.

“You continue to confuse rescue with victory.”

Roman looked toward the hidden cameras.

“Release them.”

“Della came willingly.”

“You kidnapped her sister.”

“Sophie is safe as long as Della behaves rationally.”

A monitor descended from the ceiling.

Della appeared seated in a medical room with Sophie bound to a chair behind her.

Celeste stood beside an examination table wearing a white coat over her emerald gown.

The image was designed to humiliate Della with the same dress from the gala.

Celeste held a legal document.

“Sign the guardianship transfer, and your sister leaves.”

Della looked exhausted but alert.

“You will take the baby the moment he is born.”

Celeste smiled.

“You are accused of murder.”

“You arranged the accusation.”

“That is not the same as proving it.”

Roman shouted toward the camera.

“Della, do not sign.”

Her eyes lifted as if she heard him through a hidden speaker.

Charles answered instead.

“The document transfers temporary medical authority, Roman.”

“It transfers ownership.”

Charles's tone sharpened.

“Words matter.”

“So do children.”

The monitor went dark.

Evelyn approached the altar and pressed a carved flower in the wood.

A concealed stairway opened beneath it.

“I used this passage once.”

“To bring your daughter here?”

Evelyn flinched.

“To search for her after they told me she died.”

Roman wanted to condemn her, but time belonged to Della.

They descended into concrete tunnels connecting the chapel to the medical wing.

Old patient names had been scratched into the walls.

Some included dates and the words Taken or Never returned.

Malik photographed everything.

A guard appeared at the junction.

Roman disarmed him before he could raise his radio.

The man's badge identified him as private foundation security.

They found Sophie in a locked storage room, but Della was gone.

Sophie had bruises around her wrists and terror in her eyes.

“They moved her to delivery.”

“She is not in active labor.”

“They gave her something.”

Roman carried Sophie toward the agents entering through the chapel.

Malik continued with him toward the surgical wing.

Alarms began sounding.

A recorded voice announced an oxygen leak.

Staff members abandoned stations and fled through emergency exits.

Roman understood Charles intended to destroy Haven House with every remaining record inside.

They reached a glass observation room above an operating theater.

Della lay restrained on the table.

Celeste stood beside a physician preparing an injection.

Charles watched from the corner.

Roman struck the glass with a fire extinguisher.

It cracked but did not break.

Della turned her head toward the sound.

Celeste saw Roman and smiled.

She pressed the injection into Della's intravenous line.

The fetal monitor accelerated.

Roman hit the glass again.

Malik found the magnetic lock panel and tore away the cover.

Charles spoke to Della while watching Roman struggle.

“Your child will be raised without fear or scandal.”

Della pulled against the restraints.

“My child already has a family.”

“Your husband is dead.”

“His brother came.”

Roman struck the glass a third time.

The panel failed.

The door released.

Celeste grabbed a surgical instrument and held it near Della's throat.

Roman stopped.

“Let her go.”

Celeste's eyes burned with hatred.

“Do you know what Evan took from me?”

“He refused to become you.”

“He promised me the trust.”

“He loved her.”

Celeste pressed the instrument closer.

Della whispered something Roman could not hear.

Celeste leaned down.

Della drove her forehead into Celeste's nose.

Roman crossed the room before Celeste recovered.

He caught her wrist and threw the instrument away.

Malik restrained the physician.

Charles backed toward the oxygen control panel.

Evelyn entered behind the agents.

“Do not touch it.”

Charles looked at his sister.

“You finally chose a side.”

“I chose one years ago.”

Evelyn's voice shook.

“I chose yours, and my daughter paid for it.”

Charles activated the emergency purge.

A warning light turned red.

Oxygen pressure surged through the facility.

A spark anywhere could turn Haven House into a furnace.

Roman cut Della's restraints.

She gripped his arm.

“The injection started labor.”

They moved her onto a stretcher while agents arrested Celeste and Charles.

Then the lights failed.

A gunshot sounded in the corridor.

When emergency lamps flickered on, Charles was gone.

Evelyn lay on the floor with blood spreading across her coat.

Celeste stared at the open service door.

“He took the master ledger.”

May you like

The fetal monitor emitted a long warning tone.

Della's baby had lost its heartbeat.
