Chapter 8 - Room 417.

Roman called hospital security while driving toward St. Catherine's.

Naomi reached Della's floor first and found the room empty.

This time there was no false nurse and no wheelchair footage.

Della had left on her own.

Her fetal monitor lay disconnected beside a handwritten note.

Do not follow me until you open Room 417.

Roman read the note twice.

Malik examined the hallway cameras.

Della had walked out wearing a nurse's coat, moving slowly but without visible force.

A taxi picked her up near the emergency entrance.

“Why would she leave?”

Naomi looked at the note.

“Because someone threatened a person she believes we cannot protect.”

Roman called every number connected to Della's past.

The free clinic director did not answer.

A nursing school friend reported that Della's younger sister, Sophie Hart, had disappeared from her apartment that morning.

Roman understood.

Della had traded herself for Sophie.

He wanted to search for her immediately, but the note gave an instruction Evan had prepared before his death.

Room 417 had to contain leverage stronger than the hostage.

Hawthorne National Bank opened its private vault by appointment only.

Roman used his family name to force an emergency meeting with the manager.

The brass key matched a deposit room rather than a box.

Room 417 required two keys and a spoken passphrase.

The bank held the second key.

The manager asked for the phrase.

Roman looked at Evan's card.

“I will never make you beg to be believed.”

The lock opened.

Room 417 contained no cash or jewelry.

Metal shelves held medical grant files, donor agreements, audio recorders, and sealed envelopes labeled with names Roman recognized from politics and finance.

A projector stood at the center beside a single chair.

When Roman entered, it activated automatically.

Evan appeared on the wall.

“If Roman is watching, then Della trusted you farther than I did.”

Roman felt the words like deserved punishment.

Evan explained that Charles and the Voss family had redirected foundation donations through phantom clinics for more than a decade.

Some money funded political influence.

Some financed private settlements for crimes committed by donors.

The most disturbing payments supported an unlicensed maternity research program called Haven House.

Poor pregnant women had been offered free care, then pressured into surrendering parental rights after delivery.

Babies with wealthy prospective adopters generated enormous hidden fees.

Della had discovered unusual patient records while working at the free clinic.

Evan traced them to the foundation.

Celeste managed Haven House through a shell charity.

Graham moved the money.

Charles protected the trust.

Evan's recording continued.

“The ledger proves fraud, but the patient testimony proves what they are.”

Roman opened a cabinet containing dozens of video statements.

Women described intimidation, altered medical records, and infants declared dead who later appeared in private adoption files.

Naomi covered her mouth.

Malik stood completely still.

The final shelf held a folder marked Della Hart.

Inside were surveillance photographs dating back to her first meeting with Evan.

A risk assessment described her pregnancy as a “succession complication.”

A typed recommendation proposed obtaining the infant through an emergency guardianship order if Della became legally unavailable.

Roman read the sentence until the words lost meaning.

They had planned to take Evan's child before Evan died.

A second document bore Celeste's initials.

Accelerate removal if marriage is verified.

Naomi photographed every page and transmitted copies to federal investigators.

The bank manager announced that outside counsel had arrived with a court order to freeze the room.

Charles had moved faster than the warrant system again.

Roman began loading the most important files into evidence cases.

The lights flickered.

Malik checked the corridor.

Bank security officers approached with a man claiming to represent the trust.

The man was Peter Saye, the false contractor who removed the courthouse ledger.

His real name was Victor Dane, a former intelligence officer employed by Charles.

Dane smiled when he saw Roman.

“Your brother made this unnecessarily emotional.”

Roman stepped between him and the evidence.

“You killed Martha Bell.”

“She refused relocation.”

Naomi's phone recorded the answer from her pocket.

Dane noticed too late.

He reached for the device.

Malik intercepted him.

The fight crashed into the narrow corridor.

Bank guards hesitated, uncertain which order carried legal authority.

Roman sealed two evidence cases and ordered the manager to protect the women in the videos.

Dane broke free and pulled a knife.

Malik caught his wrist, but the blade cut across his shoulder.

Roman drove Dane into the vault wall and held him until federal agents arrived.

Dane laughed while they handcuffed him.

“You are protecting evidence while Della walks into Haven House.”

Roman grabbed his collar.

“Where is it?”

Dane smiled through blood.

“Ask your mother.”

Roman's mother, Evelyn Blackwood, had remained absent since the gala.

She claimed illness and refused every call.

Roman drove to the Blackwood estate with Naomi and the federal evidence team behind him.

Evelyn waited in the library beneath a portrait of Evan as a child.

She looked older than she had at his funeral.

“You opened the room.”

“You knew.”

“I knew enough to be afraid.”

“Where is Haven House?”

Evelyn poured tea with trembling hands.

“Charles will kill her if he believes she can identify the patients.”

“Then tell me.”

Evelyn looked toward Evan's portrait.

“I signed the original property transfer.”

Roman felt the final structure of his family collapse.

“Where?”

She gave him an address in the mountains beyond the city.

Before Roman left, Evelyn caught his sleeve.

“Della was not the first pregnant woman Celeste attacked.”

Roman turned.

Evelyn's eyes filled with shame.

“Evan had a twin sister.”

The family history said the infant girl died at birth.

Evelyn whispered the truth.

“She was taken through Haven House.”
