Chapter 13: The Safe House

Marcus drove them to a secluded, highly fortified penthouse in the heart of the city—a corporate safe house Ethan owned under a dummy corporation, known only to a trusted few.

The city lights far below offered a stark contrast to the dark, suffocating halls of the Vance estate. Once inside, Marcus’s team swept the perimeter while a private, on-call physician arrived to properly examine Clara and Leo.

Leo was physically unharmed, exhausted to the point of passing out the moment his head hit a soft pillow in the guest room. Clara’s shoulder was heavily bruised, but thankfully nothing was fractured. With her arm in a sling and a dose of painkillers in her system, the intense trembling finally began to subside.

Ethan found her sitting on the leather sofa in the living room, staring blankly out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering skyline. He sat beside her, placing a steaming mug of tea on the glass table in front of them.

"The ledger is in the hands of the authorities," Ethan said softly. "The DA moved faster than I expected. They raided St. Jude's an hour ago. They found records of dozens of wealthy clients paying Dr. Aris to 'disappear' unwanted family members."

Clara finally pulled her gaze from the window, looking at Ethan. The commanding, intimidating businessman she had served for two years looked incredibly human tonight—tired, deeply relieved, and profoundly grateful.

"What happens to her now?" Clara asked.

"Victoria will spend the rest of her life in federal prison," Ethan stated, his jaw setting. "Her family's assets are being frozen as we speak. The nightmare is over, Clara."
