Chapter 14: The Cornered Rat

Back at the Vance estate, the scene was one of chaotic justice. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand marble foyer where Clara had nearly lost her life.

Victoria sat handcuffed to a heavy wooden chair in her own dining room. Her silk gown was ruined, covered in concrete dust and grease from the garage floor. Despite her bloodied hand being bandaged by a paramedic, she retained her haughty, venomous demeanor.

"You have absolutely no right to detain me!" Victoria snapped at the lead detective, a weary-looking woman named Cortez. "My lawyers will have your badge for this. I was attacked in my own home by a deranged servant and my unstable husband!"

Detective Cortez didn't blink. She calmly placed a clear evidence bag on the mahogany dining table. Inside was the small, leather-bound notebook.

Victoria’s face drained of all color. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"We've already cross-referenced the bank accounts, Mrs. Vance," Cortez said, leaning over the table. "Dr. Aris is currently in custody, singing like a bird about your fifty-thousand-dollar deposit. Your parents were intercepted at the private airfield twenty minutes ago, trying to flee the state."

Victoria stared at the ledger, the physical manifestation of her cruelty and greed. The facade of the untouchable heiress finally shattered. She slumped forward, the heavy steel handcuffs clinking against the polished wood table as a low, pathetic sob escaped her throat.

"Read her her rights," Cortez instructed a uniformed officer. "And get her out of my sight."
