Chapter 10 - The Envelope at the Gate.

No one touched the envelope for twenty minutes.
Peter sent two guards to inspect the roadside while Adrian arranged a secure route to a private hospital in White Plains.
Claire sat beside Noah in the back seat of an armored SUV.
She kept one palm against his chest as if counting every breath.
Evelyn sat opposite her with medical equipment ready.
Adrian stood outside the vehicle when Peter returned with the envelope inside a clear evidence sleeve.
"No device," Peter said.
"Just paper."
Adrian opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Daniel Dawson.
Claire saw it through the open door.
Her face collapsed.
The photograph showed Daniel alive, sitting in a chair in a windowless room.
A newspaper rested on the table beside him.
The date was three weeks after the day Claire had been told he died.
"No," she whispered.
Adrian looked at the back of the photograph.
One sentence had been typed there.
HE LIED TO YOU BEFORE WE DID.
Claire took the picture with shaking hands.
"He was alive."
"At least when this was taken."
"He let me bury an empty coffin."
Her voice rose.
"He let me tell Noah his father was dead."
Evelyn gently touched her shoulder.
Claire pulled away.
"Don't."
She stared at Daniel's face.
"Why would he do that?"
Adrian had no answer.
The timing was deliberate.
Someone wanted Claire angry at Daniel.
Someone wanted her emotionally off balance before they reached the bank.
Adrian took the photograph back.
"This is manipulation."
Claire looked at him with tears burning in her eyes.
"That doesn't make the date fake."
"No."
"So he lied."
"Possibly to protect you."
"Everyone keeps protecting me by lying to me."
The accusation was not directed only at Daniel.
Adrian accepted it anyway.
They left for the hospital under guard.
Noah was admitted through a private entrance.
His fever was treated aggressively, and within two hours his breathing steadied.
Claire remained beside his crib.
Adrian stood in the hallway with Peter.
"The bank can wait until Noah is stable," Adrian said.
Peter nodded.
Then his phone vibrated.
His expression changed.
"What?" Adrian asked.
Peter turned the screen around.
A news alert showed Cafalli Holdings headquarters surrounded by federal vehicles.
The headline reported allegations of financial misconduct and obstruction.
Adrian's name was already trending.
Claire stepped into the hallway and saw the screen.
"What happened?"
Adrian read the article.
Anonymous records accused him of authorizing illegal transfers through the same shell companies linked to Victor.
The signatures looked real.
Too real.
"Victor," he said.
Peter's phone rang again.
This time it was Cafalli Holdings' board chairman.
Adrian answered.
The chairman did not bother with small talk.
"Adrian, the board is meeting in thirty minutes."
"Without me?"
"About you."
Adrian looked through the hospital glass at Noah sleeping beneath a white blanket.
The Scorpion Group had failed to take Claire.
May you like
So they had changed targets.
They were going to strip Adrian of the company before he could reach the truth.
