Chapter 7 - The Loyal Man's Lie.

Gabriel Stone entered the penthouse wearing a dark overcoat and the expression of a man arriving for an ordinary morning meeting.
He smiled at Adrian.
Then he saw Peter.
The smile changed by half an inch.
Then he saw Claire.
That was enough.
"So it's true," Gabriel said.
Claire pulled Noah closer.
Adrian gestured toward a chair.
"Sit."
Gabriel did not.
"You should send her away."
"Why?"
"Because she brought trouble into your home."
Adrian's face remained unreadable.
"What kind of trouble?"
Gabriel looked toward Claire.
"The kind that gets people killed."
Peter shifted his weight.
Gabriel noticed.
"Peter, don't make this theatrical."
"Sit down," Peter said.
Gabriel laughed.
"You too?"
Adrian turned the tablet around.
The garage footage filled the screen.
Gabriel stared at his own face beside the tattooed man.
For the first time, he had no answer ready.
"Tell me his name," Adrian said.
Gabriel looked at him.
"You don't understand what you're looking at."
"Then explain it."
"That man is not someone you challenge because you're angry."
"Name."
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
"Elias Rusk."
Claire's fingers dug into the blanket.
"He was outside my building."
Gabriel looked at her almost sadly.
"You should have left New York when Daniel told you to."
Claire stood so abruptly that Noah stirred.
"You knew my husband?"
Gabriel's silence answered.
Claire's voice cracked.
"Were you there when he died?"
Peter stepped forward.
"Gabriel."
Adrian raised one hand.
He wanted the answer.
Gabriel looked at Claire.
"No."
She stared at him.
"Did you know they were going to kill him?"
Gabriel's face tightened.
"Yes."
Claire slapped him.
The sound snapped through the room.
Gabriel did not retaliate.
He simply looked at her.
"I tried to get him out."
"You let me think he abandoned us."
"Because if you knew he was dead, you would have started asking questions."
"I did start asking questions."
"And that's why they found you."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Who are they?"
Gabriel looked exhausted now.
"Victor doesn't run the Scorpion Group."
Adrian frowned.
"Then who does?"
"No one person."
Gabriel finally sat.
"It's a network built around leverage. Judges, contractors, cops, bankers, union fixers, people who owe favors and people who are afraid. Victor became their doorway into Cafalli Holdings."
Claire stared at him.
"Why the tattoo?"
"The tattoo is for the men who enforce the promises."
Adrian felt disgust rise in him.
"And you?"
Gabriel pulled back his left sleeve.
No tattoo.
"I was the man who cleaned up after them."
Peter's expression darkened.
"For money?"
Gabriel shook his head.
"For Adrian."
Adrian's face hardened.
"Don't use my name to excuse yourself."
"Your father made a deal before you inherited the company. When he tried to break it, Victor arranged the crash."
The room became perfectly still.
Adrian heard Claire whisper, "Oh my God."
Gabriel continued.
"After Thomas died, they were going to come after you too. I agreed to cooperate so they wouldn't."
Adrian stepped closer.
"You sold out innocent people to protect me?"
Gabriel's eyes filled with something that looked almost like shame.
"I thought I was containing them."
"Daniel Dawson is dead."
"I know."
"Claire has been hunted with an infant."
"I know."
"And last night, men came to my door."
Gabriel looked toward the elevator.
"That wasn't supposed to happen."
Adrian's voice dropped.
"What was supposed to happen?"
Gabriel looked at the brass key around Claire's neck.
May you like
"I was supposed to take that before Victor realized she still had it."
Then the lights went out.
