Chapter 13 - What Thomas Cafalli Built.

Adrian felt as if the room had tilted beneath him.

"You're lying."

Daniel did not defend himself.

He simply opened an old file on the table.

Inside were copies of contracts, handwritten ledgers, and photographs.

One photograph showed Thomas Cafalli standing beside Victor and three men Adrian did not recognize.

On the table between them was a silver scorpion emblem.

The date printed on the back was 1998.

"Your father and Victor built the network together," Daniel said.

"It started as a way to control construction contracts and protect Cafalli projects from extortion."

Adrian stared at the photograph.

"My father hated organized crime."

"Eventually."

Daniel's voice softened.

"But not at the beginning."

Claire stood between them, still furious and confused.

"Why fake your death?"

Daniel looked at her.

His face broke.

"Because they gave me a choice."

"What choice?"

"Disappear, or watch them kill you."

Claire slapped him.

Then she hit his chest with both hands.

"You let me grieve you."

"I know."

"You let me raise Noah alone."

"I know."

"You were alive while I was sleeping in shelters because I was afraid to go home."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"Every day I stayed gone, I told myself it was one more day you were alive."

Claire stepped away from him.

"You don't get to call that love."

No one spoke.

Adrian looked at the documents again.

Thomas had created the machine.

Victor had perfected it.

Then, years later, Thomas tried to dismantle it.

That was why he died.

Adrian found a handwritten page bearing his father's signature.

The final line read: VICTOR WILL NEVER LET ME LEAVE THIS CLEANLY.

For six years, Adrian had built his identity around the belief that his father had been an honorable man murdered by something corrupt outside the family.

The truth was uglier.

Thomas had helped create the corruption that eventually consumed him.

Helen Ward moved suddenly toward the doorway.

Peter blocked her.

"Don't."

Helen's composure vanished.

"You have no idea what Victor will do if that archive is opened."

Adrian looked at her.

"I'm beginning to."

Daniel lifted his sleeve.

A black scorpion tattoo marked his wrist.

Claire recoiled.

Adrian stared.

"Explain."

Daniel's voice became quiet.

"They marked me after they took me."

"So you're one of them?" Claire whispered.

"No."

He looked ashamed.

"But I did things for them to stay alive."

Claire turned away.

Another betrayal.

Another person who had decided she deserved lies instead of truth.

Adrian understood her anger now in a way he had not before.

Gabriel had done the same to him.

Thomas had done it to everyone.

Protection had become the favorite excuse of cowards.

Adrian picked up the brass key from the table.

"We're opening the archive."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Victor will be waiting."

Adrian looked at the federal agents behind Peter.

"Good."

His phone rang.

Victor's name appeared.

Adrian answered on speaker.

Victor spoke only one sentence.

"Bring the key to the bank, nephew, or the child in that hospital never sees morning."
