CHAPTER 3: POWER REVERSED

The hospital boardroom filled within the hour.

Executives. Legal. Security.

And one general who didn’t sit—he stood.

Benjamin sat at the far end of the table, pale, sweating through his collar.

“This is being blown out of proportion,” he said, forcing confidence. “It was a stressful situation—”

“You struck a medical professional during a life-saving procedure,” one board member cut in.

“She disobeyed protocol!”

“She saved the patient.”

That shut him up.

General Walker slid a file across the table.

“Your evaluations,” he said.

Benjamin hesitated before opening it.

Inside—years of records.

Signed.

Stamped.

Authored by one name.

Dr. Nora Whitfield.

“She recommended you,” Walker said. “Promoted you. Defended you when others said you weren’t ready.”

Benjamin’s hands trembled.

“I… didn’t know.”

“No,” Nora said from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

She stepped in, no longer in scrubs—composed, authoritative, undeniable.

“You didn’t care to know.”

The silence this time wasn’t shock.

It was judgment.
