Chapter 12: Eye of the Gale

The Polaris was a ghost ship caught in a nightmare.
Through the driving rain and the sweeping beams of the Aegis’s searchlights, Elara could finally see the massive heavy-lift ship. It was listing dangerously to starboard, practically wallowing in the monstrous troughs. Waves crashed entirely over its main deck, threatening to drag it down to the abyssal plain.
"They've lost all power, Captain," Harris reported, squinting through binoculars. "I don't see anyone on deck. They must be huddled in the superstructure."
Launching small boats in these conditions was a death sentence. Helicopters were entirely out of the question due to the hurricane-force winds. There was only one way to get the crew off.
"We are going to pull alongside," Elara said, her eyes fixed on the listing behemoth. "We'll rig a heavy line between the ships and transfer them across in a Stokes litter. One by one."
Harris lowered his binoculars, looking at her with wide eyes. "Captain, the margin for error... if a wave pushes us together, our hulls will collide. We could cripple the Aegis."
"I am aware of the physics, XO," Elara said calmly. "I have the conn. Tell the deck department to rig the transfer lines on the starboard side and stand by."
Elara stepped away from the captain's chair and moved directly behind the helm console. She wasn't going to rely on a junior officer to relay her commands; she was taking direct control of her ship's movements.
"Give me manual control of the throttles," she ordered.
For the next forty-five minutes, Elara Vance executed a masterclass in seamanship. She read the chaotic rhythm of the monstrous waves, anticipating the violent surges and vicious crosscurrents. With minute adjustments to the twin screws and the rudders, she danced the massive, nine-thousand-ton warship within seventy feet of the sinking Polaris.
"Shoot the line!" Elara barked into her radio.
Down on the exposed, weather-beaten deck, her sailors fired a pneumatic line-throwing gun. The bright orange line shot across the churning abyss, landing squarely across the bridge wing of the Polaris.
Slowly, agonizingly, the trapped civilian crew hauled the heavier transfer lines across. The wind howled, trying to tear the ships apart, while the rogue waves tried to smash them together. Elara’s eyes darted constantly between the distance markers, the throttle readouts, and the angry sea. Sweat beaded on her forehead, mixing with the damp chill of the bridge. Her shoulders burned with a fierce, radiating agony from the sustained tension, but she refused to yield a single inch to the pain.
"First survivor is in the basket," the deck officer reported over the radio. "Hauling across!"
One by one, suspended over a deadly, churning black canyon of water, the crew of the Polaris was pulled to the safety of the destroyer. Elara held the Aegis in a steady hover, fighting the ocean with pure grit and immense mechanical power.
"Captain, that's the last of them!" the radio crackled. "Twenty-two souls aboard and secured. Cut the lines!"
"Lines cut! Helm, hard right rudder! All ahead flank!" Elara ordered.
The Aegis roared in response, banking sharply away from the dying cargo ship just as a massive rogue wave lifted the Polaris and rolled it completely onto its side.

Elara stepped back from the console, her chest heaving, the adrenaline slowly beginning to ebb. She looked over at Harris. The XO was gripping a handrail, a look of profound, undisguised awe on his face.
"Course to the nearest safe harbor, XO," Elara said quietly, rolling her aching shoulders. "Let's get these people home."
