Chapter 2: The Shark Tank

The Grand Ballroom of the Mayflower Hotel was a sea of pristine white dress uniforms, tailored tuxedos, and designer gowns. A string quartet played softly over the hum of polite, calculating conversation. Warm, golden light refracted through massive crystal chandeliers, casting a glamorous glow over the attendees.

Elara stood near the edge of the room, nursing a glass of sparkling water. She felt the phantom ache in her shoulders, a dull throb that always flared up when she was tense. And she was incredibly tense.

"Commander Vance."

Elara turned. Approaching her was Chloe Sterling, a prominent socialite and the daughter of a civilian defense contractor. Chloe was breathtaking in a sparkling, long-sleeved beaded champagne dress, her blonde hair swept up into an intricate, flawless updo. She navigated the room like a shark in a sequined skin.

"Ms. Sterling," Elara replied, keeping her voice even and her posture rigid.

Chloe offered a smile that didn't quite reach her cold, calculating eyes. "I was surprised to see you on the guest list, Elara. We heard the incident with the Aegis was... devastating. It’s so brave of you to show your face after losing your command."

"I didn't lose my command," Elara corrected, her tone polite but laced with steel. "The ship is undergoing repairs in dry dock. I am on medical leave."

"Right, of course," Chloe purred, stepping uncomfortably close. She held a crystal flute of champagne, her eyes darting over Elara's outfit. "Though, I must say, a heavy wool cape at a spring gala? It’s a bit theatrical, isn't it?"

"It’s regulation-adjacent," Elara said, taking a subtle step back. "Excuse me, I need to find my table."

Before Elara could pivot away, Chloe sidestepped, blocking her path. The socialite had always resented Elara; in a city where Chloe traded on her family's wealth and manufactured drama, Elara commanded genuine respect through grit and blood. Chloe couldn't stand it.

"Oh, come now, Elara," Chloe said, her voice raising just enough to draw the attention of the surrounding officers and their spouses. "You don't need to hide anymore. We're all friends here."
