Chapter 3: The Scars We Carry

It happened in a fraction of a second.

Under the guise of a friendly, adjusting touch, Chloe reached out and gripped the collar of Elara’s navy cape. With a sharp, deliberate tug, she pulled the heavy fabric down.

The cape slipped off Elara’s shoulders, pooling at her elbows.

A collective gasp rippled through the immediate crowd. The polite chatter in the vicinity died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence. Dozens of eyes locked onto Elara’s bare back. Under the bright, unforgiving light of the chandeliers, the jagged, furious red and pink scars were impossible to miss. They were a violent contrast to the elegant black silk of her gown.

"Still hiding those?" Chloe asked, her voice dripping with mock pity, a smug, satisfied smile playing on her lips as she looked at the horrified faces of the guests.

For a terrifying second, Elara was transported back to the smoke-filled corridor of the Aegis. She could hear the metal groaning, smell the burning wires, and feel the agonizing heat searing into her skin. Vulnerability washed over her, hot and suffocating. Tears sprang to her eyes before she could stop them.

She quickly crossed her arms over her chest, gripping the fabric of her strapless dress to keep it secure, effectively hugging herself. Her shoulders shook slightly as she looked around at the staring faces of Washington’s elite.

Then, the shock morphed into something else. The fear in Elara's chest ignited into a fierce, protective fire.

She locked eyes with Chloe, her voice trembling but ringing out with undeniable defiance in the quiet ballroom.

"I got my entire crew home."

The words hung in the air, a heavy anchor of reality in a room built on superficiality. Chloe’s smug smile faltered.

Suddenly, the crowd parted. Men and women in expensive clothes stepped back respectfully to make way for a figure in a pristine white naval dress uniform. It was Fleet Admiral James Hayes, a man whose chest was heavy with rows of combat ribbons and whose stern face commanded the absolute respect of the entire Armed Forces.

He walked with steady, deliberate steps, stopping exactly two feet in front of Elara. He didn't look at her scars with pity, nor did he look at Chloe at all. He looked directly into Elara’s tear-filled eyes.

Slowly, the Admiral brought his heels together with a sharp click. He stood at perfect attention, his expression filled with profound reverence. He raised his right hand, snapping off a crisp, flawless salute.

"Welcome home, Commander," Admiral Hayes said, his voice echoing clearly across the hushed ballroom.

A hot tear spilled over Elara's eyelashes, tracing a path down her cheek. The shame that had gripped her chest evaporated, replaced by a swelling, overwhelming wave of immense pride. She was not broken; she was forged in the fire.

Still clutching her dress with one hand, Elara straightened her spine, pulling her scarred shoulders back. She raised her right hand and returned the salute with perfect military precision.

In the background, Chloe Sterling stood frozen, her champagne glass forgotten in her hand, watching in stunned, defeated silence as the entire room realized they were not looking at a victim, but a hero.
