Chapter 10 - Midnight Without Shadows.

Detective Ortiz hated Cal's plan.

That was one reason he trusted her to run it.

The meeting location arrived thirty minutes later.

An abandoned municipal records annex sat near the river, scheduled for demolition and empty after dark.

Cal was instructed to enter through the loading door at midnight.

No phone.

No police.

No Nina.

Cal agreed to every demand by text.

Then he spent the next four hours doing the opposite.

Ortiz placed officers in unmarked vehicles several blocks away.

Nina equipped Cal with a legal one-way audio transmitter approved for the operation.

Elise remained with Mara at the hospital.

At 11:58 p.m., Cal walked alone toward the loading entrance.

Rain had stopped, leaving the pavement black and reflective.

Inside, emergency lights cast weak red bars across rows of empty shelving.

"Paul?"

No answer came.

Cal moved deeper into the annex.

A chair scraped somewhere ahead.

Paul Denning stepped from behind a metal shelf.

He looked exhausted and frightened.

"You came."

Cal stopped ten feet away.

"Did you send Mara to that garage?"

Paul shook his head.

"No."

"Your account did."

"Vale had access."

"How?"

Paul laughed bitterly.

"Because I gave it to him six years ago."

Cal's face hardened.

Paul raised both hands.

"Not willingly."

"They caught me changing a permit date after my supervisor ordered me to do it."

"Vale said I could lose my career or help correct a few records."

"I helped."

"Then there were more records."

"By the time I understood what they were doing, my name was on everything."

Cal asked, "And Evan?"

Paul's eyes filled with regret.

"Your brother found the transfers."

"He refused to sign."

"Richard Rourke decided Evan would become the explanation for the missing money."

The words hit Cal harder than he expected.

"You let that happen."

Paul lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

Cal took one step closer.

"Why contact Mara?"

"I didn't."

"I told her to delete the scans because I knew Vale would notice the access logs."

"I was trying to scare her away from the files."

"I failed."

Cal said, "Then why disappear?"

Paul reached slowly into his coat and produced a brass key.

"Because Vale called me yesterday morning."

"He said Mara had the archive and that I had one chance to fix my old mistake."

"I knew what that meant."

He handed Cal the key.

A number was stamped into the metal.

417.

"What is this?"

"A private document box at Harbor Trust."

"I kept originals."

"Not copies."

"Original authorizations, routing sheets, and a recorder Evan gave me the week before he was accused."

Cal stared at the key.

"Why didn't you come forward?"

Paul's answer was nearly a whisper.

"Because I was a coward."

A sound came from the dark end of the annex.

Cal turned.

Paul froze.

A phone began ringing somewhere behind the shelves.

Not Cal's.

Not Paul's.

Ortiz's voice came softly through Cal's earpiece.

"We have movement at the east exit."

Paul panicked.

"They followed me."

Cal stepped between him and the sound.

"Stay where you are."

The east door opened.

Police lights flooded the narrow windows before anyone could enter.

Ortiz's team moved in and secured the building.

The mysterious phone was found on an empty shelf.

It had been placed there on a timer.

No attacker was inside.

But the phone contained one photograph taken less than ten minutes earlier.

It showed Cal entering the annex.

Someone had been watching from outside.

Ortiz looked at the image.

"This wasn't a trap to hurt you."

Cal closed his fingers around the brass key.

May you like

"It was a message."

Paul whispered, "Richard wants us to know he can still see us."
