Chapter 13 - The Story They Chose.

The investigation became public two days later.

It did not happen because Cal leaked documents or because Mara gave an interview.

It happened because the city inspector general announced a formal review of the old Mercer Development case, St. Catherine disclosed an internal security investigation, and financial crimes officers executed warrants at three Rourke-connected offices before sunrise.

By breakfast, news vans lined the hospital entrance.

Mara watched them from the sixth-floor window.

"I hate this."

Cal stood beside her.

"The cameras?"

"Being turned into a story before I can finish being a person."

Cal understood too well.

"Then don't give them you."

"Give them facts."

Elise arranged a short written statement instead of a press conference.

Mara confirmed that she was cooperating with investigators and asked the public to avoid speculation while evidence was reviewed.

It was calm, precise, and impossible to twist without looking dishonest.

Dylan tried anyway.

That afternoon, his attorney released a statement claiming Mara had voluntarily attended a social meeting and suffered an unfortunate accidental fall after becoming upset.

The statement said Dylan had acted responsibly by ensuring she received medical care.

Cal read it twice.

Then he put the page down.

"He still thinks confidence can replace evidence."

Nina entered carrying a laptop.

"Then he is going to dislike this."

Garage C had recently upgraded its payment system.

The public-facing security cameras stored only thirty days of compressed footage.

The payment kiosks stored a separate low-resolution transaction video used for disputes.

Celia Ward had remembered one detail nobody else asked about.

Dylan had argued over the parking fee before the meeting and used a kiosk near Level Four.

The kiosk video had not been deleted because it belonged to a different vendor.

Nina played it.

At 9:18 p.m., Dylan appeared clearly beside the machine.

At 9:34, Mara walked into frame.

At 9:36, Trent crossed behind her.

At 9:39, Mason approached carrying the backpack later seen at the library.

Most importantly, at 10:02, the camera captured Mara moving toward the exit alone.

Dylan stepped into her path.

There was no audio.

There did not need to be.

Mara attempted to go around him twice.

Trent and Mason moved closer.

The group disappeared beyond the camera angle.

Seven minutes later, the black Northline SUV entered the frame.

Mara was carried toward it with visible care but no sign that emergency services had been called.

Ortiz watched the sequence in silence.

"This destroys the voluntary social meeting claim."

Elise nodded.

"And raises new questions about why they delayed proper reporting."

Mara did not celebrate.

She stared at the screen with an expression Cal could not read.

"I remember that moment."

He sat beside her.

"You don't have to watch again."

"No."

She pointed at the screen.

"Right there."

The video froze on Dylan blocking her path.

"He told me I was making a mistake by leaving."

Cal asked, "What else?"

Mara's voice became distant.

"He said, 'Ask Evan Mercer what happens when people make problems for my family.'"

Nina stopped typing.

Cal felt the old anger rise, but this time it came with clarity.

Dylan had not merely known Evan's name.

He knew exactly how his family used it.

Ortiz's phone rang.

She answered and listened.

Then she looked toward Mara.

"Richard Rourke wants to speak with investigators voluntarily."

Cal laughed once, without humor.

"Now?"

Ortiz nodded.

"His attorney says he wants to correct the record."

Mara looked at the frozen image of Dylan.

"No."

Everyone turned toward her.

"He doesn't want to correct the record."

May you like

Her eyes narrowed.

"He wants to choose the next story before we do."
