Chapter 8 - The Copy They Missed.

For the first time since waking, Mara smiled.
It was small, tired, and almost invisible.
Cal noticed anyway.
"Why are you smiling?"
Mara looked at the paused image of Mason taking the drive.
"Because that wasn't the only copy."
Nina laughed once over the video call.
"I knew I liked you."
Mara explained that the physical drive contained the documents she expected someone to look for.
The complete archive was stored in an encrypted cloud vault created under a random account name.
She had memorized the recovery phrase and written nothing down.
Cal stared at her.
"You planned for this."
"I planned for someone to take a flash drive."
Her eyes dropped toward the bandages.
"I didn't plan for the rest."
Nina and Ortiz returned to the hospital after securing the library video.
Using Mara's recovery phrase, Nina opened the encrypted archive on an offline laptop.
Hundreds of pages appeared.
Permit amendments.
Wire confirmations.
Consulting agreements.
Internal city memos.
And a spreadsheet titled LANTERN.
Cal recognized several project codes from Mercer Development.
Nina began comparing dates.
Within minutes, a pattern emerged.
Money had moved from the investment fund backing Mercer's projects into a chain of consulting firms.
Those firms shared addresses, accountants, or directors connected to Rourke Holdings.
Evan Mercer had approved none of the transfers attributed to him.
His digital authorization credentials had been used while he was traveling outside the state.
Cal stared at one transaction for nearly a minute.
The amount was large enough to explain the financial hole that destroyed the company.
"They put this on Evan."
Nina did not soften the answer.
"It looks that way."
Ortiz cautioned them.
"Documents can be forged."
"We need originals, server logs, and independent verification."
Mara nodded.
"There is more."
She opened a scanned zoning memo.
A handwritten note appeared in the margin.
E.M. refuses revised allocation.
Need alternate approval path.
Cal's eyes stayed on the initials.
"E.M. was Evan."
Nina pointed to the author code.
"This memo came from Graham Vale's office."
Ortiz took a photograph of the screen.
"Now we have a direction."
Cal scrolled farther down.
A file named FINAL-M appeared near the bottom.
It contained a single scanned letter from Evan to Richard Rourke.
Cal had never seen it.
The first line stopped him cold.
Richard, I will not sign a false certification to protect your committee.
Mara watched Cal's face.
He read the rest silently.
Evan accused Richard of diverting investor funds and using municipal amendments to conceal the transfers.
He threatened to report the scheme to regulators.
The letter was dated four days before investigators publicly accused Evan instead.
Cal sat down.
For six years, he had carried shame for a brother who had spent his final days insisting he had been framed.
Now the first real proof was glowing on a laptop screen.
"Why didn't Evan show this to his lawyer?" Mara asked.
Nina answered quietly.
"Maybe he did."
Everyone looked at her.
She turned the laptop toward Cal.
At the bottom of the scanned letter was a receipt stamp.
Received by counsel.
Graham Vale.
Cal felt the room go silent again.
Vale had not merely known about Evan's accusation.
He had received it before representing Evan in the settlement.
Ortiz's phone vibrated.
She read the message and stood abruptly.
"Someone just attempted to access the city's archived Mercer server using Mara's credentials."
Mara went pale.
"I'm locked out while I'm on medical leave."
Nina asked, "Where did the login originate?"
May you like
Ortiz looked at the location data.
"Rourke Holdings headquarters."
