CHAPTER 1: THE RESULT NO ONE EXPECTED

Ethan’s smirk didn’t just fade—it shattered.

“Security? What the hell is this?” he demanded, his voice cracking for the first time that night.

The doctor didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he placed the sealed file on the counter with deliberate care, as if what was inside carried weight far beyond paper.

“Mr. Carter,” he said calmly, “this is no longer a standard paternity issue.”

My heart didn’t race. It steadied.

Because I already knew.

“What do you mean?” my mother whispered.

The doctor finally opened the file.

“The DNA test confirms that the child is—” he paused, glancing at me briefly, “—biologically related to the mother.”

Ethan scoffed loudly. “No kidding. That’s not what we’re here for.”

The doctor’s expression didn’t change.

“But Mr. Carter…” he continued, “you are not a genetic match to the child.”

Silence dropped like glass shattering across the room.

Ethan exhaled sharply, almost victorious—until the doctor added:

“And based on your medical records… you cannot be the biological father of any child.”

The air shifted.

“What?” Ethan’s voice lowered.

The doctor turned another page.

“You underwent a vasectomy three years ago.”

My sister gasped.

My mother covered her mouth.

And Ethan—Ethan went pale.
