CHAPTER 3: THE NIGHT I DIDN’T UNDERSTAND

Six months ago.

The fainting spell.

The emergency visit.

The IV.

The consent forms I barely read.

“You were briefly enrolled in a fertility-related study after your collapse,” the doctor explained. “There was a clerical error.”

“Error?” my mother repeated sharply.

The doctor nodded.

“Your records were mistakenly switched with another patient undergoing assisted reproductive treatment.”

My hands trembled.

“So… this baby—?”

“Is yours,” he said firmly. “But conception did not occur naturally.”

Ethan let out a bitter laugh.

“So she cheated with science?” he sneered.

“Enough,” my mother snapped.

But the doctor wasn’t done.

“The sperm donor is registered. Verified. And legally documented.”

Ethan folded his arms.

“Good,” he said. “Then bring him in. Let’s see the guy who replaced me.”

The doctor didn’t move.

His silence said everything.
