CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET HE FORGOT

“I never told anyone,” Ethan whispered, stepping back.

But I remembered.

Three years ago. A business trip. A “routine procedure.” He told me it was minor. Temporary. Reversible.

I had believed him.

“You told me it could be undone,” I said quietly.

He looked at me like I had just rewritten reality.

“I… I was going to,” he stammered. “I just never—”

“Never what?” I asked. “Never thought it would matter?”

The doctor cleared his throat.

“There’s more.”

Security shifted closer to the door.

Ethan noticed.

“What more?” he snapped.

The doctor’s eyes were sharp now.

“The DNA test shows something unusual. The child’s genetic profile doesn’t just exclude you.”

He paused.

“It connects to another patient currently in our system.”

My blood turned cold.

“What patient?” I asked.

The doctor looked at me.

“Your baby’s DNA matches samples from a fertility program conducted at this hospital.”

The room spun.

“I never—” I started.

Then I stopped.

Because suddenly… I remembered something I had buried.
