Chapter 5: The Transfer

The heavy steel door shuddered under another violent blow from the guard's crowbar.

Julian pressed his back against the cold metal to brace it.

"How much longer do you need?"

Julian shouted over the deafening noise.

"I am searching the local drive now."

Elena replied, her eyes scanning the rapidly scrolling lines of data.

The bright blue light from the monitors cast long shadows across the small room.

"The estate security system creates a new folder every hour."

She explained quickly, clicking through multiple encrypted directories.

"I need the exact timestamp from when you saw them in the library."

Julian closed his eyes, forcing himself to focus despite the chaos.

"It was right before the main speech."

He said, opening his eyes with sudden clarity.

"Try eight-fifteen."

Elena typed the numbers into the search bar and hit the enter key.

A grid of video thumbnails instantly populated the large central screen.

She clicked on the camera feed labeled for the East Library.

The crisp footage of Victoria and Marcus appeared on the monitor.

"We have it."

Elena breathed a heavy sigh of genuine relief.

"Now we need to get it out of this building before he breaks in."

Julian stepped away from the dented door and hurried to her side.

"Send it to Detective Vance at the city precinct."

Julian instructed, typing a familiar email address into the prompt.

"He has been investigating my father's sudden passing for three weeks."

A loud metallic crack echoed through the chilly server room.

The top hinge of the heavy door began to give way.

"The file is attached and uploading."

Elena stated, watching a green progress bar slowly fill on the screen.

"Come on, come on."

Julian muttered, watching the percentage climb agonizingly slowly.

Eighty percent.

Ninety percent.

The guard smashed the heavy crowbar directly into the electronic locking mechanism.

Sparks showered onto the dark concrete floor outside.

"Upload complete."

Elena announced triumphantly as the screen flashed a bright confirmation message.

Julian quickly grabbed a heavy red fire extinguisher from the wall mount.

"Get back, Elena!"

He warned her just as the door burst violently open.
