Eleanor Caldwell didn’t raise her voice.
She didn’t need to.
“Tell me,” she said calmly, “would you have treated me differently if I arrived in diamonds?”
Vanessa swallowed hard. “Of course… I mean, no—I treat everyone with respect—”
A murmur rippled through the lobby.
Everyone had seen what happened.
Eleanor stepped closer, her eyes sharp despite her age. “Respect is not a performance. It is who you are when you believe no one important is watching.”
Vanessa felt exposed… stripped bare.
At that moment, a familiar voice cut through the tension.
“Mother?”
