Chapter 1: The Ceremony That Stopped

The music faltered.

It wasn’t planned. The string quartet didn’t stop all at once—but one violin missed a note, then another. Conversations softened into uneasy murmurs as I stepped onto the aisle… not alone, but with Ellie clinging to me.

Two hundred guests turned.

Vanessa stood beneath the rose arch, radiant in white—until she saw us.

Her smile froze.

“Daniel?” she called, her voice light, confused. “What’s going on?”

I didn’t answer immediately. I kept walking, each step deliberate, my daughter’s arms still wrapped tightly around my neck.

The officiant cleared his throat awkwardly. “Shall we—”

“No,” I said.

The word echoed louder than I intended.

A ripple moved through the crowd.

Vanessa’s expression tightened. “Daniel, what are you doing?”

I stopped a few feet from the altar.

“Ellie,” I whispered, “do you want to stay here with Uncle Ryan?”

She nodded hesitantly. Ryan stepped forward, his protective stance immediate as he took her hand.

Only then did I look at Vanessa.

“Did you lock my daughter in a room?”

Silence.

Complete, suffocating silence.

Vanessa blinked. “What?”

“You heard me.”

Her laugh came too quickly. Too sharp. “Daniel, this isn’t funny—”

“I found her,” I said, cutting her off. “Locked in the powder room. Crying. Alone.”

Gasps spread through the guests like wildfire.

Vanessa’s eyes flickered—just for a second.

And that was all I needed.
