Chapter 2: The Truth Beneath the Smile

“Daniel,” Vanessa said softly, stepping closer, “you’re misunderstanding.”

“Then explain it.”

Her gaze darted briefly toward the guests before returning to me. “I told her to stay inside for a moment. She was… overwhelmed.”

Ellie’s voice rang out from behind me.

“That’s not true!”

Every head turned.

Ryan gently guided her forward, but she stood her ground, small but unshakable.

“You said I had to stay there,” she said, her voice trembling but clear. “You locked the door.”

Vanessa’s face hardened—just for a split second—before melting back into practiced concern.

“She’s confused,” Vanessa said gently. “She’s just a child—”

“Stop.”

My voice cut through hers like a blade.

“She is my child.”

A murmur of agreement moved through parts of the crowd.

Vanessa’s mask began to crack.

“You’re really going to ruin our wedding over this?” she whispered, anger slipping through.

“This wedding,” I said quietly, “was already ruined the moment you made my daughter feel unwanted.”

Her composure snapped.

“Oh, come on, Daniel!” she hissed. “You’ve babied her long enough! She’s not the center of your world anymore!”

There it was.
